I am new to the group and have so much to learn.

My journey has just began....several years ago (2014) I had my gal bladder removed, still had discomfort in the side and it was thought to be IBS. Last September I had my hip replaced after 5 years of suffering and my fitness depleting and weight gain, I have never been overweight till all this started.

In April 2021 my pains got worse so decided to check with my doctor and had a scan which has confirm fatty liver.

Since my hip replacement I have been walking 3/4 miles plus exercise will around March when I injured my knee and having issue with it.

Up to all the above starting, I was fit, exercised most day, cycled, gym, walked, skied.

I feel like now I have hit an age and my body if collapsing and also shocked as I have always been healthy. My diet is good, always home book, plenty of vegetable and fruit, breakfast always a healthy kefir with oats, nuts, seeds, apples, and fresh and dried fruit, my lunch homemade soups with a couple of slices of wholemeal bread. Evenings fish at least 2/3 times a week. not much processed food, very little cheese, mainly bad when we eat out, which before covid around 2/4 times a month. Alcohol maybe 2/3 times a week.

But overall felt I had been eating and living a fairly healthy life !!!! So it looks like I have a lot to learn !

I have already spoken to my nurse practitioner and expecting a call from my doctor tomorrow. But need answers !

When my hubby was being assessed to see why he had liver damage as a t-total and totally fit guy his doctor said you can still have fatty liver even if you are built like a "racing snake". (In hubbies case it turned out he actually has an auto immune liver disease and not fatty liver but it was something they assessed him for).

With all your pain through the years were you by chance taking pain meds ? - fatty liver isn't only caused by food, diet or exercise but medicines can cause it too. Also, it is coming to light that certain types of gut bacteria can almost brew their own alcohol in your system leading to alcohol like fatty liver even in people who don't drink or drink very little. livescience.com/alcohol-pro...

The BLT has a page dedicated to Non Alcohol Related Fatty Liver Disease at:- britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

Ask about an ELF test (Enhanced Liver Fibrosis test) which is a series of blood tests that can help stage any fibrosis - if a Fibroscan machine is available in your health board are that might also be good to get. A fibroscan measures both the fat content of your liver and also measure any fibrosis that might be present.

Try and get a referral to a hepatologist (liver specialist) or a gastroenterologist at least as this condition will need properly monitored going forwards.

Thank you for your reply, it’s been a bit of a bombshell to be honest!

I was trying to not take too many painkillers and used them mainly at night and then not every night. It Was only after my hip replacement for a couple of weeks I did use them every day, as my physio told me not to try to exercise it in pain. After that I didn’t need them much.

Hopefully tomorrow’s call gives me more answers and maybe more tests.

Thank you for the links I do have a lot of readying to do 😀

Hi and welcome,

Have you been told you have Non-Alcohol Related Fatty liver disease (NAFLD)? If so, then you may be interested in our publication:

britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

NAFLD can have different stages so you are quite right to want to find out more.

NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) have devised guidelines with the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) that state people diagnosed with NAFLD should have further testing to assess for their risk of fibrosis- stiffening or scarring in the liver.

The specific blood tests are Fib-4 score blood test or an Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) blood test. A specific scan called a FibroScan also estimates fibrosis.

You may want to discuss this with your own GP who will be able to look up the NICE guidance.

If you do have some weight to lose, then you could also ask your GP for a referral to a hospital registered dietitian for more support and guidance.

If you want to call the nurse helpline at the Trust we are open until 3pm today on 0800 652 7330

Best wishes.
