Snap !

I had my routine six monthly check-up at the Liver Clinic on 4th March for bloods and ultrasound. Was told everything looked fine and didnt expect to see anyone again until September but received a letter yesterday to attend a video consultation on 26th April. Hoping it's nothing untoward and they are trying to make up for cancelled appointments last year due to covid restrictions. Good luck x

Hi Smiler, try not to panic, this is absolutely routine monitoring, any patient with cirrhosis should have an ultrasound scan every 6 months to check your liver and other abdominal organs and also to check for portal hypertension and any sign of fluid build up.

When they've said about keeping an eye on it for cancer it's because the cirrhotic tissue slightly increases your chance of getting small tumours so they do the scan every 6 months so that changes are picked up quickly enough for the now very effective treatments to be commenced in time.

My hubby has been having these scans every 6 months since 2012, he had his last one in January and in fact is off to the Golden Jubilee at Clydebank next week for an MRI scan just because some changes were picked up on his scan which need a little closer examination.

All the best for your ultrasound,

Katie

I hope I can try and reassure you here Smiler.

I think there is a misconception with most people that when they hear the word, “Tumour” they automatically think of cancer.

Many of the tumours that develop on the liver turn out to be benign and quite harmless. These can be destroyed using a technique called liver ablation. This is where heat is used to destroy the tumour. This often involves an overnight stay in the hospital.

I had five of these tumours and three of them were destroyed using this technic. The remaining two were left to grow larger.

There is also a condition known as Cystic disease of the liver. These cysts are like a fluid-filled balloon, that can grow anywhere in the body: britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

In my case, once this mass was discovered, my local hospital shared these scan images with a liver cancer hepatologist down at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. When I had the radiofrequency ablation, they take a biopsy of the tumour at the time. This is how they were able to confirm that they were indeed benign.

It is always best to identify these tumours early so they can be dealt with. This is why most people with cirrhosis will have a regular six-monthly checkup.

What I’m trying to get at here, is that it is all so easy to start worrying about cancer soon as we hear the word tumour, before a proper diagnosis has been undertaken.

Try not to become worried and all worked up.

Best Wishes

Richard

It's normal to have a scan and blood tests before going for your 6 month check ups.It will be the same for every consult from now.

Theres no point in going if they dont have the info from scans and blood results, they cant diagnose anything just by looking!

Probably you wont get the result untill your August appointment but that's normal as well.
