How much can the liver improve by over time if the assault is taken away? Has anyone ever managed to reverse HE or any other symptom?

I do but for the first 2 years it floored me but I had triple organ failure and a stroke so my body took a long time to recover as best as it couldx

Hi Rose I was in a coma and it was diagnosed then but it was only mild so by the time I was discharged from hospital it had gone and it's never come back X

Hi bintcliffe, Thanks for the reply. You are lucky that your ascites gone without any medication or ... I also have mild ascites, I took two different medications, the side effect of both were horrible, I was not able to tolerate and had to stop them. I take nothing for ascites.

How were you diagnosed with HE and how is it being treated?

Mine was reversed by a transplant, I was treated with lactulose and rifaximin.

Not officially diagnosed with anything yet, but consultant says my symptoms and eleveated bilirubin does point towards liver disease. Waiting for MRCP results. I’ve been getting very confused over the past few months. Stumbling over my words, thought process not at is was. I also have bad fatigue, even after a big sleep. Black bags around my eyes, which are also veiny.

I am not trying to be flippant but diagnosing yourself as having HE is a bit of an oxymoron. You truck along thinking that everything is going well. Even when I was hallucinating, I was concerned about the welfare of the imaginary people that I thought were real.

It is definitely better to leave the diagnosing to the people who are qualified. What really helps is to make some notes with timings and events. Consultations are very time limited and you want to use them wisely, in order to get the most from them.

Cheers. I appreciate your comments. I was having the mild HE like symptoms before I noticed I was jaundiced. I initially thought I had early dementia. It wasn’t until looked in my eyes and saw the jaundice did I then look up the symptoms.

It all depends. You have had an MRCP and that is the gold standard for identifying liver issues. Once you get the results from that and a diagnosis you will know what your journey is going to be.

Easy to say but try not to worry until you have the results. It could be a range of issues some of which are reversible or can be improved with the correct diet and drugs. It can seem difficult at this stage with so many unknowns but it’s pointless worrying about it until you know what ‘it’ is.

Be kind to yourself, eat a balanced and healthy diet. If your able go out and walk every day it will all help whatever the diagnosis is. The fitter you can get the better the body will be able to repair. Also, the fitter you are the better you will recover should you need surgery, it also helps in your relationship with the hepatology team if you are seen to be helping yourself.

Good luck and give yourself some slack during this uncertain time - Peter
