COVID-19 Vaccine.

Just found out I’m not on the vulnerable list! Was surprised, as I was decompensated last year. I’m a lot better now. Any ideas??

Oh right,I never looked at it like that? I thought they just missed me or something as my surgery said it’s not them who decides,it’s NHS England!! Who are they? My consultant?

There are two levels of vulnerability listed by NHS. Those who are clinically extremely vulnerable i.e. the shielding group and on here that will account for those who are post transplant, those with AIH on high doses of immune suppression and those receiving treatment for cancer and probably those with actual decompensated cirrhosis.

If you now have compensated cirrhosis you will now fall into the moderate risk (clinically vulnerable) i.e. those with an underlying health condition. (My hubby although he has cirrhosis, borderline diabetes and a compromised spleen never received a shielding letter and so is in this group too).

People at moderate risk (clinically vulnerable)

People at moderate risk from coronavirus include people who:

are 70 or older

have a lung condition that's not severe (such as asthma, COPD, emphysema or bronchitis)

have heart disease (such as heart failure)

have diabetes

have chronic kidney disease

have liver disease (such as hepatitis)

have a condition affecting the brain or nerves (such as Parkinson's disease, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy)

have a condition that means they have a high risk of getting infections

are taking medicine that can affect the immune system (such as low doses of steroids)

are very obese (a BMI of 40 or above)

are pregnant – see advice about pregnancy and coronavirus

Unlike people at high risk, you will not get a letter from the NHS.

As regards the vaccine roll out then the first group or CEV group are in Group 4 for roll out and obviously we are seeing here that post transplant patients are currently getting their calls. The moderate risk group as detailed above are in Group 6 which includes:-

" All individuals aged 16 years to 64 years with underlying health conditions which put them at higher risk of serious disease and mortality (and also those classed as unpaid carers - those in receipt of carers allowance) ". (This is the group of folks who usually get invited in for an annual flu jab).

From doing/looking at the various online calculators for 'When will I get my jab?' it looks like this group will have first jabs by March/mid-April.

How did you find this out ? My hubby was told by liver doc to shield last year, was wondering if he will be called for it, we have never had a letter or call for flu jab (I arranged that this year) So who decides if they get it ?

Hi. It depends on what your husband has been diagnosed with and his ongoing state of health.If he falls into the clinically vulnerable group as of 2020 it may depend when in the year this happened and whether your doctor has notified the relevant bodies. On the gov.uk site you can register for this category as long as you have your doctors/consultants letter etc, you will then receive confirmation by post as my sister did. Take care.

My consultant phoned me said don’t worry and basically get on with it!!
