Hello, 1326, I don't wish to sound patronising in any way, but the question must be that if two years ago you were told that you had the start of liver disease, why did you feel the need to ignore this?

There is often an underlying problem that causes a person to want to drink heavily. This can be for many different reasons, or could even be a case of habit. The person who calls into the pub each evening after finishing work does so because it becomes a habit. After a while, they are drinking because this is now their routine and this is what they always do. They’re no longer drinking because they want a drink, they are drinking because it’s now six o'clock and they always go to the pub at this time.

For others, it may be to escape a traumatic episode in their lives. Depression or a lack of self-confidence can also be a driving force.

Understanding the reason that’s driving that need for a drink is important. Often when a person goes on to develop a drinking problem, the real reason as to why they want or need a drink can become lost. Understanding what’s driving that need is important.

Once addiction takes ahold, it is the addiction that becomes the driving need and becomes the new need. You are now drinking because you have to, not because you want to.

So, trying to understand why you chose to ignore what your liver was trying to tell you and carried on drinking, means you need to do some soul searching and see what is going on with your life.

It’s far better to try and do this now while you still can, rather than end up one day in a hospital bed with a load of tubes plugged into you and wondering how it ever came to this?

If you'd prefer, you could always send me a private message.

Good Luck. And enjoy an alcohol-free New Year and a Dry January.

Richard

I thought psychosymatic (don’t you just love people who use big words on discussion forums) stuff was nonsense, but I also had aches and pains in the rib area for six months after I stopped drinking. I was slim and ate OK so decided to go for a private fibroscan. All was normal, and the pains stopped that very day! The doctor couldn’t explain the pains but confirmed all was OK and said I’d done by far the best thing by quitting alcohol.

Hi,

We would suggest you consider seeing your GP and having an open and honest chat. They will be able to physically examine you and review your symptoms. It would also be a good idea to discuss fibrosis testing with the GP to see if there is any stiffening or scarring in the liver.

Moving forwards you may also want to consider some support to manage your relationship with alcohol and some specialist diet support via your own doctor to help you with a balanced nutritional diet.

Take care and keep us posted how you get on.

Well done for stopping drinking, not easy especially at this time of year. The only way your going to find out the consequences, is to speak to your GP. However I was told that liver disease very rarely causes pain, so it might be something more simple like gallstones, but only your GP will be able to give you a definitive answer. Good luck
