Any one else with false Ultrasound readings..

Hi, I was just replying to someone else and thought I would pose this question. A while ago I had raised liver tests, only mild but significant. Anyway as a result i was monitored and then given some symptoms was sent to hospital, at that time they did a CT, MRI with contrast and an ultrasound, all came back fine, or so I was told. Anyway roll on and the bloods stayed up and i was given a fibrascan that showed I had Fatty Liver Disease, with extensive fat coverage, what i asked them at the time was why was this not picked up by 3 other scans, and I remember not getting a clear answer, because if i googled it at that time it told me that MRI was very sensitive in detecting Fatty Liver. I have since adopted a non-drinking, healthy lifestyle and brought the bloods back down and due another FS soon. But I always wondered why it did not show up? Anyone else experienced this at all...

Congratulations on changing your lifestyle, as you have already found out this can have a positive effect on your blood tests and it will be interesting to see the results of your next FibroScan.

WIth regards to previous test results, it is difficult to comment and I would suggest you discuss this with your liver teamf or analysis and interpretation of our previous results.

Best wishes,

That’s scary. I’ve had numerous CTs, MRIs and Ultrasounds that have not picked up irregularities. What I know is that it is dependent on the equipment used and the radiologist reading. Had MRI and MRCP at Bethesda Medical Center that picked up nothing remarkable but followed up with CT at John Hopkins that scared the daylights out of me. However none of the scans reported any Fibrosis.

Did they show any Fatty Liver, as i just presumed that one of these tests other than the ultrasound would be able to show fatty deposits, I dont know enough about MRIs to know do they actually take a picture? ie shouldn't that show fatty liver?

My last MRI (Aug) stated “no discernible amount of fat in liver noted”. However my last Fibroscan (Apr) showed a CAP score of 230. When first diagnosed 6 years ago Cholestasis was mentioned.

That was good then, as they both confirmed the same thing ie I think 230 means very little Fat, mine CAP was nearly 300, although there did not appear to be much fibrotic damage ie 2.5? Its just with up to approx 60% of liver covered in fat according to CAP, Im just wondering why that did not show on MRI and CT, one of them has to be right? But which one? What I am saying is that i could have easily been released from hospital with what is a healthy liver when in fact it is unhealthy. I had elevated LFTs thats why they sent for Fifbro scan, so I am acutally left wondering
