Hello,
Has anyone been using Whey protein for their NAFLD diet which tends to use High protein intake?
I have several concerns here khanahsan. Firstly the different stages of the liver disease normally progress from Fatty Liver to the Liver Fibrosis stage. Looking at your previous post from 10 months ago, you say then that you were diagnosed with having Advanced Fibrosis after having a liver biopsy. This would mean that NAFLD is no longer seen as being your issues, but that of liver fibrosis.
I understand that those people with any degree of liver disease should avoid taking Whey protein as this can cause further damage to an already damaged liver that is trying to regenerate and repair its self.
I have come along this extract here online which might help the clarify this.
“Researchers found that when not exercising, the proteins from the whey supplement ended up going to the liver for processing—instead of being used for muscle synthesis. Over time, sedentary participants showed signs of early liver injury. While whey protein is heavily used by athletes, many non-athletes consume it as well. Whey protein can be found in meal replacement shakes and other diet-related food products that promise weight loss or increased muscle mass through food alone. This becomes an issue because consumers are led to believe that whey is akin to a superfood, when in reality it could damage their liver over time”: switch4good.org/harmful-sid....
I hope this helps.
Please don’t go taking anything that you see online, such as supplements and so called liver detox concoctions. These are oftern being sold by unscrupulus traders.
Always seek advice from your doctor or healthcare professional.

Hi
It is really important to only get specific dietary advice from your own doctors. Advice is dependent on diagnosis, stage, plus other medical conditions etc.
Whey protein and any protein is processed in the liver but also in the kidneys so be careful your kidney labs are ok (creatinine, GFA, etc) as people who are overweight often have pre-diabetes or DM2 and NAFLD together. Great job losing weight!
