Raised GGT/ALT. Completely lost.

Hello all.

I literally found this forum minutes after speaking with my GP.

I am 37, 6'1, 15 stone. Don't drink alcohol over the weekly suggested amount, and don't smoke.

I was told today that my GGT levels are at 100, and that my ALT is 66.

Doctor didn't explain clearly what this meant or how bad it was, only that I have to return on three months to give another blood test.

Could any one shed any light on how serious this is? I am totally clueless.

Thanks folks.

I’m not a dr or an expert, learning slot as I go. Did you maybe have any drink shortly before the labs and or are you on any type of pain medication? Usually I think mild elevation would mean slight liver inflammation. I drank a lot and never had raised enzymes until I quit which is weird. I also have hashimotos and hypothyroidism from getting radiation to fix my hyperthyroidism so drs keep telling me it’s due to hormones being out of wack. I would just eat clean for the next few months and maybe walk or get on a bike for 30 min a day if you can to see if that helps your nexts labs. Also maybe ask for an ultrasound. I have fatty liver from drinking and my labs were fine at the time of diagnosis, only my ultrasound showed the fatty liver. They won’t say much about fatty liver except eat well and try to stay in shape and as long as you do that your probably ok but if you don’t take care of yourself things can get worse after a few years.

You are absolutely correct. I had alcohol the night before the test, and the test itself was first thing in the morning. I am an idiot and didn't realise this could affect the blood test and I apologised to the doctor. I have to give another sample in three months. Is always a concern though. It's definitely been a shock and your advice about exercise and food is very welcome.

Hi I have alt 42 and ggt 216!

Doctor assumed alcohol with me also. My doctor is sending me for an ultrasound as I had a liver condition while pregnant although cleared up after she was born. A lot have mentioned ibuprofen to me as I had been taking ibuprofen 8 days 3 times a day.

I’ve also seen gallbladder issues can cause these to elevate also

That must have been a shock! I also take ibuprofen, or TOOK it I should say. Won't be taking it from now on. You never know.

It was I went for bloods for something else and that popped up. He said everything else was fine but my liver enzyme is high and pretty much said I was an alcoholic lol I hardly drink and hadn’t for those 8 days cos I had been taking ibuprofen 🤦🏻‍♀️ I am trying to not take it anymore I get migraines once a month and it’s usually that what I take: but I’ve not taken anything and also been eating healthier and not drinking until my ultrasound and next bloods. May quit drinking altogether ! Proper scared me! I’m 33, 5’7 and 12.5 stone.

Good morning Soriox,

Welcome to this friendly, supportive forum. It is impossible to reach a diagnosis after one set of elevated tests. I do think it is important to follow up on these in the future as your doctor has suggested.

I see our forum members are offering suggestions about lifestlye changes - and I would reiterate this as this is beneficial for long term liver health and also would give a clearer picture in your next tests.

I have included a link to our information on liver tests for your information.
