Ear Infection & Not in Senses

Anyone faced ear infection during Cirrhosis? My dad has pus coming out of his left ear since day and half at every few hours apart. Since doctors have discharged him after saying he will not make it, best to give him comfort at home, we are left on own. I did visit doc and he said it’s normal to get infection due to his weak immune system, just give him antibiotics drop in ear. He didn’t say anything else. But dad is not eating anything at all nor he is responding to us when said or asked something. All he does is sleeps and he does change his sleeping positions on own. He opens his eyes slightly sometime. We feel he is not able to understand anything we say or ask. All he does is nods yes or no if we ask him something. Yes and no for same thing. He doesn’t wanna drink water either. We do keep trying and rarely we get successful feeding him icecram and water. Same with medicines.

It’s extremely painful to see him in such condition and not getting any help from hospitals to ease his symptoms and provide him some comfort. I feel he is nearing his time.

Hello,

I am so sorry to read of the very sad situation you and your family find yourselves in. The fact that your father may be 'nearing his time' is not a reason for him not to have the care that he needs. Can you get the GP to do a home visit to review him? Do you have help looking after him - any district nurse, carers? Has he been referred to the local community palliative care team for help with symptoms/pain and also to give you and the family support? You may be right in saying your father does not have long to live so the quality of the time that he has left is really important not just for him but also for you as a family. These are issues to discuss with the GP as soon as possible.

We do have a free telephoen helpline oif yu woudl like to talk to one of our liver specialist nurses:

0800 652 7330 Mon - Fri 10:00 - 15:00

regards
