Still worried about Mum.

My mum is now in a local smaller hospital.

She was moved a few days ago after 3 weeks in our main hospital. She was suffering from HE (explained in my last post)

Just need advice because i don’t find a huge difference in her.

The ward sister talked to me today about her and she said that she has been taken off her water tablets as they are not good for her liver, but they are doing blood tests to see if she can go back on them ( her legs are very swollen with water, not much water in her belly area)

She doesn’t eat and drink much they say?

She has started physio for her legs as she finds it hard to walk because of the HE. But i also think its a lot to do with the amount of water in them aswell. Must be so uncomfortable.

She is still very confused and distant. And just tired all the time. Even though its been 3 weeks.

Im so worried about her.

The nurse also told me today that she needs 24 hour care so for me to look at residential homes??

This has really scared me? I cant understand whats going on? Why she isnt recovering from it?

She was doing quite well in the main hospital?

Any advice would be so much appreciated.

Thanks x

So sorry to hear that your mum has not improved. The furosemide tablets caused me kidney damage and I had to stop taking them and they kept trying me with small doses of spironolactone, so perhaps they are going to try and give her smaller doses and see if one is better for her than the other.

I had rifaxamin prescribed for HE, I can’t remember if you said your mum had been prescribed that.

Have they suggested giving your mum an NG tube to try and get some decent calories into her? I hated the idea, but due to some complications I had to have one and it really does get calories in!

Sorry you are struggling so much to get answers and I am not sure I have been much help. I hope things improve soon🙏

Thank you for your reply Lam1e.

I know my mum was prescribed that in the main hospital but not sure if she is still on it. I have a telephone appointment with her new doctor tomorrow morning so i will be asking about her blood results and a list of her medications she is now on to compare what she was on at the main hospital.

Hoping she is gonna be put back on her water tablets real soon.

I will also be suggesting the nasal tube to get the calories she needs. 👍🏻

Thank you so much for your advice.

And yes, you have been so much help.

Thank you.😊 xx

Good afternoon,

It sounds like you are still not getting a good supply of information about your mother's condition and prognosis. Has anyone spoken to you about what follow up your mother is going to be having post discharge - she will definitely need something organised.

It might be an idea for you to ask for a meeting to be arranged with the team of doctors/nurses/physio's etc to discuss your mothers condition, whether they think there is room for improvement and if not why not. Was she under a liver specialist team at the other hospital and do the team at the current hospital have contact with them for advice on managing your mother's condition?

You have every right to speak to medical staff about your mother and ask the questions you need to ask.

regards

Overuse of water tablets can cause acute HE which is reversible. Good message from Trust5. Hope things are better.
