Question about 12 year old daughter’s liver function test

Hello everyone,

Since 3-4 years, my daughter used to get severe vomiting, sometimes twice a year or maybe thrice and then she would be ok. I assumed that it’s something she ate/ bacterial / viral , as it would get better in a day or 2. However ever since this year started, she had these episodes many times and they would get better ... but all of a sudden she also started suffering from nausea and appetite loss constantly and lost a lot of weight.

I took her to the doctor and we did a Complete blood count and liver function test.

I’m concerned about the liver function test as Total bilirubin is 1.4, direct bilirubin is 0.5 and indirect bilirubin is 0.9. These are all higher than usual.

Meanwhile serum gamma, AST, ALT, ALK Phosphatase are all within normal ranges.

Blood count is all within normal range, besides eosinophils which are 9.1 percent (normal range 0.3-7.4).

I will be going to the GP to show the reports but wanted to ask if anyone has an opinion as to why the bilirubin levels are higher than normal and why she keeps getting sick with vomiting and nausea?

Thank you

Unfortunately none of us are doctors or qualified to comment on blood test results especially with regards to children and you really need to wait and have the discussion with your doctor as to what the tests might indicate, it does sound like she needs more thorough examination.

The British Liver Trust is primarily to do with adult liver disease too so those of us with knowledge of liver disease tend to have it only with a view to liver conditions in adults.

Sorry you are unlikely to get much help here with this one and wish you and your daughter all the very best.

I'd be asking for a referral to a specialist haematologist or perhaps a hepatologist. It could be Gilbert's syndrome with her bilirubin level rising intermittently in response to stress e.g. puberty causing the recent rise in the frequency of her symptoms. The eosinophils being raised suggests that she has some sort of infection. With all of her liver enzymes apart from bilirubin being normal it's unlikely to be a serious problem with her liver. The recent increase in the frequency of her symptoms requires more investigation than a GP can do.

Good morning Kmazhar,

As our forum members have commented, the British Liver Trust is for adult conditions only. We are unable to comment on children,
