last year my mom decided to have her whole abdominal ultrasound because she had pain in her lower abdomen due to her myomas and ovarian cysts but unfortunately found a small mass in her liver measuring 2cm she was shocked that time because she doesn't drink alcohol. she doesn't have any symptoms but I'm scared if it would grow or would turn in to cancer??? she can't have ultrasound again due to lockdown

id appreciate your comments

Don't automatically fear the worst as regards the mass in the liver, there are a whole range of totally benign liver lumps, bumps and growths such as haemangioma (my hubby has at least two) plus liver cysts and other things. britishlivertrust.org.uk/in...

She should have an MRI scan as follow up to assess what this mass is and hopefully they can arrange that a.s.a.p. My hubby waited 12 weeks for a scan following the discovery of a new mass on his liver so hopefully if a follow up scan has been arranged for mum and she'll get is as soon as hospitals reopen for normal business.

Do you know if she has had a blood test called AFP (Alpha Feto Protein)? This is a tumour marker and can indicate (in some cases) whether there is any cancer.

Hopefully it isn't anything to be concerned about.

No symptoms from his masses as my hubby has cirrhosis of the liver so undergoes regular 6 month screening for liver cancer (just because cirrhosis can slightly heighten the chance of that) and his odd lumps, bumps and cysts were found on this regular screening. When he had his follow up MRI for the latest mass it turned out in his case just to be an area of denser tissue i.e. just a bit of his cirrhosis.

I know it is worrying, hopefully they will arrange or already have arranged an MRI and it's just a bit of a wait.

He has never drank in his life, his cirrhosis is due to Auto Immune Liver Disease and he's now been diagnosed for 8 years. Muddling along, living the best life he can despite the limitations that cirrhosis brings.

Thank you.

i thought people who drank so much alcohol would only get liver disease.

hope for the best for your husband.

No, sadly not the case. Although alcohol related liver disease is probably the cause which gets the most press & public attention.

Alcohol related liver disease is just one of many causes of liver ill health - as I say in hubbies case his was auto immune hepatitis. There are numerous other auto immune conditions where the persons own immune system attacks their liver. There are also viral diseases (Hepatitis A, B, C, E etc). Genetic and hereditary conditions which can be passed down through families. By far the most common liver condition now is Non Alcohol Related Fatty Liver Disease which comes from a build up of too much fat in the liver - this can be lifestyle related i.e. diet and exercise but it can also be as a result of medications that people have to use or even as a side effect to diabetes.

Babies can be born with liver disease so severe they need transplant so

If your mum turns out to have a cystic disease of the liver this also isn't alcohol related.

The British Liver Trust is an amazing source of information liver related. britishlivertrust.org.uk/
