Just waiting for results

Hi

I’ve written a couple of posts and have had some really helpful reply’s. Everyone has been so helpful and nice.

Sorry in advance to ask you all another question but does anyone know the average time it takes to get a liver biopsy result?

I had a emergency liver biopsy done eleven days ago. No one seemed to know how long it would be before I got my results.

I was just put on a general ward afterwards and the staff were so busy with patients in the side wards with suspected Coronavirus, I didn’t feel comfortable asking a lot of questions.

I was referred by a gastro consultant for the biopsy but I have no appointment in place to go back and see him.

I’ve telephoned his secretary to ask about an appointment but she has put a message on her line to say she isn’t working with things as they are, and she doesn’t offer any alternative number to call. There doesn’t seem to be anyone manning the telephones in their office.

My GP practice isn’t open, it shut two days ago for deep cleaning because a patient went there with the Coronavirus. At the moment nobody seems to know when it’s going to open, patients are just being told to go to the walk in centre or ring 111

So now I’m left wondering if my results are ready, or is eleven days to early? And I’m stuck in thinking of what I can do to try and find out what the results are and what the future holds for me.

If anyone has any ideas I’d be really grateful for them because my minds really stressed😥 with it all, and I’ve been experiencing quite a lot pain lately. Thanks xx

Hi,

Not the ideal situation to find yourself in. I was in hospital when I had my biopsy done and was taken down from the ward. I received the results three days later and it is definitely a stressful time, waiting to find out.

I received the results from the Heptologist, whilst I was still on the ward and they confirmed the diagnosis that I had already been given.

My suggestion would be to keep trying the Gastroenterologist and maybe leave a message.

Everything seems to be difficult right now, hopefully you were discharged from hospital and are at home. All I can suggest is that you keep following all the advice you have been doing and hopefully you will hear something very soon.

Best of luck, moving forward.

Mark.

It can take a while for them to process biopsy samples - in my hubbies case he was an emergency admission to hospital and biopsy was taken in week 2 of a 3 week stay. It was a further 8 weeks before we got any follow up as the sample was looked at locally and as there was some doubt over size of sample and what it showed it also had to be sent to main liver centre for 2nd opinion. Obviously at this time labs are going to be extremely busy and I know it is frustrating in the extreme when you want answers and want to know what you are dealing with but you will need to be prepared no doubt for a bit of a wait.

All the best, Katie

Hiya I had a liver biopsy approx 3 weeks ago. I was advised that the results would be back approx 10-14 days later...I waited 16 days then called the Gastro secretary who advised they were back but the consultant had not seen them or compiled any letter. I waited for a further 5 days or so and then asked if they could email to my GP and at least he could give me some information as I was feeling anxious. He just called me this morning. Is there anyone covering your GP surgery whilst it’s shut ie another surgery? I agree with TT keep trying the consultants Secretary and if no joy ctc their PALS office and explain you need some help/support (that has worked for me before when the phones just been ringing out) Good luck x

Hi,

Good advice from our members. We would suggest to keep trying the consultant via the phone and maybe also write a letter to them, which will have to be read and actioned.

Hopefully you will get your results soon

Take care

Hi

Results are ready the same day when done privately. So I would imagine that wherever it was done would have them well before now.

I know people have concerns about data protection and privacy issues but is there any reason in these difficult times why consultants, GPs and patients can't communicate with each other by email. So much quicker than letters, hanging on the end of a phone or waiting for a face to face appointment.

Probably not a good idea for a full on consultation but results of blood tests etc.? suggested appointment times? requests for a renewed prescription?

Not what you're looking for?
