Good Morning, I was wondering how accurate is a ultrasound in diagnosing cirrhosis? I had a scan and they say that the liver looks coarse and you have or may have cirrhosis!! I’m not clear if I don or I don’t!! Few years back I had a biopsy and I was diagnosed with fibrosis but I think this time it’s more of a guess rather then accurate diagnosis or can they actually tell from the ultrasound. please share if anyone has been through the same. Thank you
Hope

Hi hope ..if they see a coarse liver on ultrasound there is a strong possibility that it could potentially be cirrhosis as a normal liver doesn't show this pattern on ultrasound!
It could be that your fibrosis has progressed and that you might have incipient cirrhosis which is the early stages!
Best to talk it through with your GP or consultant to get some answers and to talk through where you go from here in terms of further tests to confirm this diagnosis.
Thank you for your reply. I’ve been on pred for almost for years now. Liver enzymes are like a yo-yo so pred dose has also been same up and down. Non of the immunosuppressant worked for me they have tried several. I’m due to see my consultant will ask him if can do further test to confirm the extent of the disease
I have had a look at alot of different opinions and sources and have decided on my opinion that a conventional ultrasound is not accurate for detecting cirrhosis.
