I had a fasting ultrasound scan on my abdomen today. I saw a big red blob on the picture, right in the middle. Any ideas? I can’t understand Google’s interpretations. It was a follow up one to cater for changes over the last year! I don’t know what it might be. Also, a number of times the probe hurt quite badly in various parts of my abdomen. I have NASH and Cirrhosis as well as a severe bleeding problem that the medics are having difficulties in understanding. Are Varices likely to show up on a US, with my history.
Many thanks for trying to helping to sort this

Hi
I'm sorry but I haven't got a clue. Hopefully someone will be along shortly. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx
It was probably the radiographer assessing pressure in the portal vein. US scan is black and white images. If there is any colour it's looking at venous and arterial blood flow, which the scanner adds to differentiate between.
So just to reassure you it wouldn't have been a red blob inside you!! You can ask the radiographer to explain what they are looking at, and they are usually happy to tell you.
I hope that I've understood your question properly, and that this is what it was.
Wass has it correct. The coloured images you see on ultrasound is the blood flow through the veins feeding the liver. The colour, either blue or red, just depicts the direction of flow, either coming towards the probe or moving away from it. I cant remember which one was blue and which one was red though.
