Lungs

I have ALD and am currently on 50mg Spironolactone for ascites and 40mg Propanolol for varices. I keep getting slightly bubbly lungs when I lie down for a while and in the morning. Is this related to the ALD or entirely separate? Thanks. Wendy

Hi Wendy

It was definitely one of the horrid symptoms I had before my first ever Hospital admission for cirrhosis. It makes it so hard to sleep doesn’t it 😕.

I left it it ages before I went to the liver clinic again because I didn’t want to make a fuss. Bad move! Daughter had to wheelchair me in by that time as I couldn’t walk and I was in a Hospital bed within literally 15 minutes. The next two weeks were, and continuing to be, a blur... 👎

Please don’t be as silly as I was, and get to see your doctor or Consultant ASAP!!

Good luck

Miles

Thank you Miles. I have been seeing a Gastro/Hepatic consultant and have had so many tests I have lost count. Next week brings Haematology and Bone density scan but I have never mentioned the lung thing

Wendy, you could mention it next week, but they might not be the right people but I am sure they will advise!!

Give it a whirl - always better to say something isn’t it! 😀👍.

Whether this is related to your liver issues or not it needs to be brought to the attention of your doctors. Do you also suffer breathlessness? There are conditions of the lungs that can be a side effect of chronic liver disease such as Hepatopulmonary Syndrome. So make sure you get checked out.

Hi Katie, Not noticeably breathless but since my muscle wastage and tiredness all the exercise I do is gentle walking. Wendy

They should be able to check your oxygen saturation levels to see if you are genuinely having a lung problem.

Get checked out, you should jot down any symptoms you are having (whether you think related or not) and report to your specialists at appointments. They perhaps form parts of a jigsaw which will paint the full picture of your condition.

I am on the same dose of Spironolactone for ascites and Omeprazole for my varices etc. But while I tolerate the spironolactone well I get bad side effects from the Omeprazole. My muscle wasting and anaemia make me very breathless and tired. 😔😔xx
