Statin

My GP says not to take a statin because of my cirrhosis caused by NASH. My liver doctor put me on a statin and says I need protection for my heart as the benefit is greater than the risk to my liver. Just wondering what others are told about taking a statin.

Hi

I don't need them at the moment but there was a point when I might have needed them and my heptologist said it was fine.

Hi Kay,

Can only offer this tidbit,

besides liver disease, my husband has significant heart disease.

He was prescribed 80 mg of atorvastatin a few years ago along with tons of other meds for his heart.

When the Cardiologist learned of the cirrhosis diagnosis, all heart meds were stopped with the exception of 10 mg of the atorvastatin.

Cirrhosis. GP reluctant to prescribe any Statin for my slightly elevated cholesterol. A Mediterranean diet with plenty of fish oil suggested.

I've since been diagnosed by with Atrial Fibrillation & put on a Beta Blocker for abnormal Heart rate & rhythm. It's a temporary small dose 1.25 whilst awaiting a defib appointment in a few weeks to kick it back into rhythm. I haven't seen my Liver Consultant to comment.

NHS site under considerations

Statins shouldn't be taken if you have severe liver disease or if blood tests suggest that your liver may not be working properly.

This is because statins can affect your liver, and this is more likely to cause serious problems if you already have a severely damaged liver.

Don't worry too much about AF but take it seriously. I've had it for about 12 years. I had two defibs in my late 60's but both didn't last long. Depends on your age I think. It's very common. There is an AF association website which is well worth a visit. Good luck

More surprised as I don't notice anything different. I'm glued to this Fitbit since the chest pain in Aug was undiagnosed and put down to either cartilage or muscle? Beat wise my HR if anything appears to be low mid 50 not racing, thought hit 80. I'm chilled. Yes age thing, my father's been on warfarin 20 odd years 81 next month. Thanks I'll check that AFA?

PS I'm Chad 0.

Hi, I started taking a statin when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 20 years ago. 18 months ago diagnosed with cirrhosis, liver specialist said carry on with statin and metformin. GP and/or diabetes nurse haven't commented. Linda

Very different opinions by our Doc's.........Perhaps they don't really know, and just being cautious. My Doc stopped mine.
