Hi,

I’m a 23 year old female- I’ve suffered with RUQ pain for well over a year now, the pain is sporadic and varies in intensity. It comes on more in the evening time, meaning when I’m at work (Sports Coach) I have to sit down as it is too painful to stand. There have been episodes where the pain has been truly debilitating, I went to A&E on one occasion where I was told it was a suspected broken rib and sent for X-Ray- which obviously showed nothing!

Two recent Ultrasound scans have showed nothing, despite experiencing the localised pain at the time. One nurse did say she could see a slight distension but it wouldn’t correlate with gallstones.

My bilirubin levels have varied - over the last 4 tests taken this year, they’ve been in range, over range, over range, and finally in range- I’m not sure if this would indicate a blockage somewhere?

When my bilirubin was above range it was brushed off as Gilbert’s Syndrome- however I was under then impression of this was the case my bilirubin would be consistently high for life?

I have had one appointment with an Upper GI consultant who sent me for the second US, but I’m now very worried he won’t be able to offer any more help!

This pain is really impacting my life. I wanted to start studying a Masters degree, however I know that the pain gets so bad I wouldn’t be able to give my all to my studies! The pain stops me from going out the house and attending work at times- being self employed it’s hard as I then lose earnings.

I would be ever so grateful if anyone has any recommendations for what the pain could be caused by, or anything I should ask the consultant to now look at as there have been no gallstones present.

Truly any advice would be appreciated,

Thankyou so much!

Good afternoon mollyl,

Sorry to hear you are struggling with pain. It can be very frustrating when you cannot seem to ascertain a diagnosis.

You say 'brushed off as Gilberts syndrome' , Have you been formally diagnosed with Gilberts syndrome?

I have included information from the British Liver Trust regarding Gilberts Syndrome.

I have also included information on liver disease tests which may help guide your consultation.

If the pain persists or worsens, please ensure you seek medical attention.

Best wishes

Hi, hope you get diagnosis soon. I would press for MRI or CT to check what is causing the pain. xx
