This week has been a rather busy week for me. This post is really for those who have an interest in alcohol-related liver disease, and who have an interest in future advances and projects.
On Thursday I had a couple of very interesting meetings at the University College London. I spent three hours with Dr Gautam Mehta, and Prof Annie Britton. I have volunteered to become involved with two future study projects.
The first project is called the Whitehall II project: ucl.ac.uk/epidemiology-heal...
This study is about to be repeated, and once all the data from over the next two years has been collected and collated. It can be used to see changes in things like drinking habits, Liver disease over a 40-year period, people’s health and eating habits etc. Already it is showing how heart related conditions have been falling steeply, but liver related conditions have escalated exponentially.
The other project I shall be involved with is called, “AlcoChange”. This is a three-year study into the use of an Alcohol monitoring mobile phone app. This app is being trialled for those people who have a serious liver issues due to alcohol abuse and who need to give up alcohol for both medical and personal reasons.

Trials of this app have been on going now since 2017. This next trial is to compare the results involving 300 people. 150 people will be given the app to try and the other 150 will follow the normal path using support groups and family monitoring.
Dr Gautam Mehta has been an avid campaigner in the fight against alcohol-related liver disease and often appears on TV programs and the like. He is also going to be helping me with a new venture I’m setting up here in Stoke-on-Trent.
Very exciting times ahead.
