Hi Linkinpark. This is a very common problem. I also had NASH and was exhausted all of the time and just wanted to sleep. I had no appetite. The best way forward on the food front is little and often. I was told 6 small meals a day (I believe now that people have been told 7 small meals). It's not easy when the appetite is depleted. My wife would just put something next to me without asking me what I wanted because I would have said no thanks, I'm not hungry. It's amazing how much you can eat when it's plonked down next to you, even when you don't particularly want it! A poorly liver can only store energy for a couple of hours or so, so if the energy isn't replaced with food the body will start taking energy from muscle (it's easier for the body to take energy from muscle than from fat). It can become a vicious circle if not eating, getting tireder and tireder and muscles starting to waste and so getting weaker as well. Exercise is important too, it will help improve energy levels and help stop muscle wastage. Even a little exercise is good like walking, lifting some small weights (I was told that even lifting baked bean cans as weights is good if too weak to lift anything more weighty). It's very hard for you I know having to deal with all this. My wife said it felt like life was completely on hold while the world carried on around us. Many people on here through healthy diet and exercise have been able to greatly improve their health and in some cases completely reverse things. Wishing you and your hubby all the very best. Alf
I love'd your bake bean comment Alf as you jumped my mind back to the 80's when I did a bit of weight training (lol) to one of Jane Fonda's keep fit video's but I used tinned tomatoes before I was able to buy myself some pink girlie weights🤣
Hilarious Alf! Spam🤣🤣🤣 People used to fry spam back in the 70's or was that the 60's? Which ever it was it was horrid stuff ! I think my family like others fried most things like chips and fried eggs all cooked in pure lard!!!!! How healthy was that????😰😰😰
I remember spam in batter. I can remember my mother always frying in lard. Bacon, sausage, eggs, fried bread. If it didn't move she fried it !! LOL Frightening thought now isn't it?
Error Alf! Weights not girlie pink, there lilac as I've just come across them underneath a pile of stuff in my office! " I knew my comment was a little off as I'm definitely not a girlie pink sort of person" 😁.
In my case I would never have known as I'm slightly colour blind and can't differentiate between shades. Wife would never dream of letting me buy her lipstick or nail varnish
Hi Alf thanks for that great reply .he finds it very hard to exercise with his fibramoylia and arthritis
I forgot to put that in .I just feel I'm living with an 80 year old when he's only 62 I feel like he's been cheated put of life at minute. Sorry having a bad day today not feeling the best
Hi Dawn, I very much understand as I have other issues too. My wife has been through what you are going through now. Even just a little exercise will help though, even doing exercise sat on a chair or some walking, or both. A little to start and build up a little day by day. The healthy eating is good, cutting out fat's and sugars and drinking plenty of water usually pays dividends. The worst thing for the liver when you have any kind of liver problem is of course alcohol, so that's to be avoided. If he follows the healthy plan with exercise hopefully he will get back to feeling 62 again, maybe even younger Keep posting and let us know how hubby is doing, we are all here to support you. All the best Dawn. Alf
Thank you Alf he has never been a big drinker and has given up completely his doctor told him to eat full cream milk and have naughty foods .be unhealthy his has cut out salt . I will let you know how he goes hope you go well too Dawn
Aha I have this quandry - for liver avoid fats for diabetes can have fats but with low carbs (latest policy for Type 2 diabetes).. I follow the diabetes policy at the moment 😁
Hi Lipo. Does the new diabetes diet say that you have to have fats, or you can have fats? If the answer is you can have fats then I would keep them to a minimum, but if you have to have fats then that makes it more difficult! Big Freddy
The “diet” (I hate that word) is low Carb high Fat. I follow the low Carb bit (<130) but ignore whether things are high or low fat. They did say things like chicken skin and meat fat are 👍 so no need to cut off. But they were pretty flexible about it all and there were other suggested diets like the Mediterranean diet.
I suppose that post transplant the liver can deal with it if you are not vastly over weight. It would soon be picked up on your blood tests if the fat was causing any problem with the liver. I was having some high protein powder in a milk shake post transplant as part of my build up diet and it showed up slight fat on one of my liver tests so I stopped it, it had helped to do it's job by then anyway.
You are being a great support to your husband, like Alf said, just put some food in front of him, he might find he does enjoy a little bit, then. I too wonder what to do with diet as like you said Milo, what is good for the liver isn't good for diabetes plus the other conditions I have!! Both of you take care, Dawn. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx
Try to keep your pecker up as I know exactly how you must be feeling!
My hubby's about to be 70 this year and about 2 years ago he had his first heart episode only after 6 months of retiring.
Within months I could not get my head around the way he'd changed and aged in himself and the way he looked and behaved towards life which was sad to see. Even my family commented on the change in him.
After about 12 to 18 months and a further two more heart episodes hubby saw the doctor again who then decided increased his meds until he sees a cardiologist! He wasn't even able to the most lightest of jobs around the house without be confined back to bed for the rest of the day!
His love of gardening stopped which we always did together!
He's improved slightly over the last 2 months and is back to some light gardening which is a great improvement.
Like you and most of the spouses on this forum we become stronger than ever as all of the everyday chores for two become ours to cope with, so please hang on and don't cave in as you have us here to talk to on those crappy bad days.
Hopefully in time with more BEAN LIFTING ☺️your hubby will also show some improvement which will make you smile!
For some apparent reason I think everyone on this planet at some time goes through a bad patch which most get through which I think with us behind you, you'll do! ☺️
I've had a larger share of the bad luck patches than most which someone once told me would make an excellent book one day, but for now I've scrapped that idea.
Well Dawn I'm here along with many others to talk too!
I'm sending you one of my invisable hugs to make you feel a little better.
I know exactly how your hubby is feeling, I to have fibro and more than one kind of arthritis. In February I had emergency surgery on my intestine, it had detached where the large and small intestine join. I had suffered from looking 12 months pregnant on and off for years! I had thought it was asitces, and planned on asking at my next appointment. This time my intestine floated into my tum and then flipped and twisted. I was in theatre for over 5 hours and I was fortunate it hadnt burst. Due to being bedridden for 6 days, I went in with pneumonia which I had no idea I had! I was starved for 9 days so I was weak as a kitten. I lost so much muscle , I knew I needed to get it back. I know just how painful fibro is and how fatigued it makes you. Im 64 but felt 104! My granddaughter is doing GCSE in sports science. She surprised me by explaining that its possible to strengthen muscles by one simple and virtually pain free exercise. She is 5'9" and a size 10 lol, superfit and all skin and muscle. Put your back against the wall and slide down 6 inches to start with. Hold for 20 seconds then straighten up. Keep your back flat against the wall. Keep repeating throughout each day and slide down a little more just until you feel it. I did and it worked! For arms it works in a similar way. Hands on table or worktop, and feet about 18 inches back. Lean into worktop and hold again for 20 seconds to start. Build up time and then do push outs from worktop. I told my ankle consultant and he said she is 100% correct and it worked so well. I too was diagnosed with Nash BUT I discovered only last week Fibroscans dont work on me! Following an AFRI scan I do not have cirrhosis, or any fibrosis, , fatty liver only. Obviously your poor man has got Nash , so he has a double whammy. The meds that help fibro pain are mostly a no no with NASH. I had been on methotrexate for 7 years but had to come of it because of my fibroscans, severe fibrosis, then cirrhosis .for those 7 years my psoriasis was under control and my pain was reduced too. I stopped it Jan. 2018. I couldn't believe how much pain had been hidden by the injections. I used take ibuprofen too but stopped them as well. I did continue with my buprenorphine patch. I had asked my liver specialist about it and he stated its a balance between quality of life. Obviously it is up to your husband's liver consultant, everyone is different, I just happen to be very different! I had been on a low carb diet since Decem
ber, but after my op had to follow a diet suited to my surgery. I know it must be hard for you seeing your man as he is, but if he could get to pain medication it may help. My patch brings the pain down from 11/10 to 5/10. As Alf says, just put tasty nibbles next to him, Smell can stimulate the appetite too, so perhaps cook a slice of bacon or part baked bread? Ask can he see a dietician, they know exactly what will benefit him. I haven't told you my story to make you feel worse, I wanted to explain why I am on here. Hazelxx
Bless you hazel I hope all goes well for you .thank you for for support xxx
Dawn
Who's for banning the diet word???? Its a word that means 'Pressure with restrictions ' I think we should replace with the word 'Healthy Eating' or another word we all could think up that's nicer and kinder to think about!
Yes at the beginning of my husbands fight and profession of the disease my husband slept all day however he was awake all night. It's just one of the symptoms of the disease. I felt so bad for him he desperately wanted to come to bed and sleep but couldn't so he stayed up all night and would fall asleep in thè day. He also didnt have an appetite until he was given a medical marijuana license. Aside from helping him eat he was able to sleep once a week maybe. Plus he took Gravol to help him sleep. I hope your loved one doesn't go through what mine did. Take care.
