Spironolactone - Sore Nipples

About 5 weeks ago I was prescribed Spironolactone to help with my Edema, it worked very well but I now have extremely tender nipples that seem to have a solid mass behind them. Has anyone else had this reaction? Did stopping the Spironolactone solve it?

Hi Snorkers. Yes it happened to me. The Spironolactone was swapped for another tablet (the name of it escapes me at the moment!) and my nipples went back to normal. Eventually I had to take the new tablet + Spironolactone, but I had to keep taking small breaks from the spiro when the nipple problem started again.

Hi Snorkers. Have remembered the name of the other drug, it was Furosemide.

Hi Snorker,

Yep, they were so so sore when I was in spiro. To the point that I went to the gp about it. But it was just a case of put up with it! Which I did.

I was on 200mg at the time. They tried to reduce the amount taken to ease the pain - but it meant fluid came back more!! Have heard the drug that Alf is talking about works well but is often taken in conjunction with spiro.

Andy.

Get off the spiro and demand Furosemide. Your nipples will get back to normal very quickly. Do not take spiro!! It’s bad for men. You can refuse it if your doctor tells you to take it. Furosemide Works a lot better.

Cheers,

Brett

Brett from my experience I had exactly same issues and with Furosemide none!

Hi, I had a similar issue with Spirolactone and was tested to see if the solid lump was a tumour. Luckily it wasn’t. I was on Furosemide simultaneously as it took both to control my fluid build up. I’m now off both meds and my nipples are back to normal. It was fun having sensitive nipples for a while though - my wife enjoyed teasing me too. Anything to make life more bearable when you’re sick.

Hi snorer, yup, been on spiro for quite some time, sore nipples and all, I also take a smaller dose of furosemide, they changed me to Eplerenone but things went drastically wrong, legs and abdomen seemed to inflate like balloons, adde a stone and a half in four days. Luckily I had a load of spiro in the cupboard, the specialist started to suggest other alternatives but I said I would happily put up with sore nipples if the alternative was possibly what I went through. It took 5-6days of spiro and furosemide to get back to " Normal" what ever that is. I hope you find a solution that's suits you.

A quick update, my GP has told me to stop taking the Spironolactone and booked me an appointment to assess but not until July 24th....

Hi Snorkers. That's a long time to wait with a fluid retention problem. How is your oedema at present?

Hi Alf, the fluid was mainly in my lower legs/ankles and was relieved when using the Medication, the side effects were too much though so we will see what happens without it... I have a Consultant appointment before the GP though so see what they say, glad they are so connected!!

I would keep your feet up a bit more in the meantime. Supposed to have your feet higher than your heart to help disperse oedema in the legs but that's not always very practical :-(
