There are a great many variables such as infection risk in the country to be visited, health care provision in that country, sufficient insurance for pre-existing conditions, presence of varices and whether there is risk due to flying, any additional vaccinations which might be required and more.

As Isabelle has said definitely a question for your own medical team who will know what stage the cirrhosis is at and whether there are issues with any of the above for the patient as an individual.

I was given permission by my QEHB surgeon to fly to Portugal just 8 weeks after an open liver resection.

The messing about in the airport made me somewhat tired but I was fine on the 2.5 hour flight. It is essential to always ask though. I was not considered to be at any risk from varices.

I’m off again to Spain in a week/refusing to wait for cancer to floor me. I will only attempt shortish flights though.

Hi,

If you have cirrhosis it is very important to discuss any travel plans with your liver consultant so they can assess if you are medically fit and safe to travel.

If you are allowed to travel, you will also need travel insurance. Here is the link to out website insurance list of some companies that cover people with chronic liver disease;

Hope that is helpful,

Thanks to all for your valuable replies. I’d have to wait a little longer to get stronger and get doctor’s answer. I don’t have varices but from US to Europe would be taxing for now.
