Hi guys ... As I posted earlier my husband had very severe internal bleeding but somehow recovered. He is discharged from hospital 20days ago but is too weak. Has lost almost 20kgs of weight but the good news is he is not taking alcohol anymore. He is sedated with medicines and sleeps almost entire day and night. Now my concern is his blood sugar level is above 500mg/dl and he is on insulin. His doctor suggested gluten free diet. Is this gonna help? In my eyes he is deteriorating very fast. He is having bad iching and bleeds. How can I comfort him? He is too young to die.

Hi there. I was 45 when I had my first bleed I’m now 50 just turned and had my TP end of February.so there is always hope.i was told that one in two die from bleeds, the best thing he has done is to stop drinking but the panic and trauma of that first bleed is terrifying.have you been referred for an assessment?and how old is he?also I couldn’t find anything to alleviate the itching which got so bad on my bottom half of my legs that I could of scratched to the bone if I didn’t dig deep to stop it.my consultant only referred me after my third bleed but was maybe deemed to healthy to get my TP.it was a portal vein thrombosis in June last year that made them decide to operate on me.its so important that you both stay positive because it is a trauma for you just as it is for your husband.my partner says now that she was really struggling and used check on me to see if I was alive every morning.she never told me until after and I couldn’t of gone through this without her.she truly was my rock and still is.so you have to stay strong for him.there is always a light however dark it gets,i so wish you both the best.been there like many on here and came through it.and you both can do the same.paul

Also I did try a gluten free diet and because of the constant gastrointestinal problems I believe it helped.just try and give it a go .it won’t do him any harm.

The best news is that he has stopped the alcohol, try and get support in place. His GP is a very good place to ask. They can also prescribe creams and lotions for the itching. Dermol for washing and maybe Fenafaxadine for the itching, it is a antihistamine.

Follow all the dietary advice given by the hospital and try and get him to exercise, walking etc. A lot of the weight loss will be down to the muscles loss after the hospital stay.

Good luck with everything, the hospital would not discharge him, if he was not improving.

Hello there,

Sorry you are both having to deal with this illness.

His blood glucose level is of concern. Are you in the UK ? - you used the measurement unit used in the USA, in the UK we refer to mml/l and not mg/dl. A blood glucose of 500mg/dl = 27mml/l. This is well above the level which indicates hyperglycaemia. This could be considered to be a medical emergency.

Combined with the drowsiness, the whole picture could mean that you really should be seeking medical support..

Please keep us informed of the outcome.
