Letter from Consultant to Gp.

How long should it take for a Consultant to inform a Gp about starting a patient on Warfarin?

I'm probably being really unfair here I know, because I want my husband to start Warfarin straight away for his portal vein thrombosis. We've waited a week (I know how short that is), not heard a thing. I rang the hospital yesterday to check if a letter is on it's way to our Gp, and it's not been sent out yet. I'm probably just getting too anxious about things.

Hi Remainer,

That will be the one that is ‘Dictated and approved electronically to avoid delay’. Then typed and posted, you get a copy at the same time. Make the appointment tomorrow, the letter will arrive before your husband gets an appointment to see his GP.

Good luck,

Mark

Yes, told it's waiting to be electronically approved. I don't know about the avoiding delay part though! Thanks for replying, will get a gp appointment sorted out. 👍

You get a copy. You can also request a phone consultation the day the letter arrives, that can do the trick in certain circumstances.

I wouldn't be too keen to start on warfarin.

Press for rivaroxaban. They don't like to prescribe it on the NHS due to cost but it's at most £2 a day. With the amount of follow up appointments warfarin needs and the complications it can cause I honestly can't see how rivaroxaban can cost them any more and it's much nicer drug to take as well, no need to avoid any foodstuffs or do anything special.

Warfarin is a pain in the bum!
