LIver problems and blood pressure reduction medication.

I have a non alcoholic fatty liver which has recently registered an average of 53kpa following a recent fibrescan. I have been taking 5mg of Ramapril for high blood pressure over a number of years. My question is: Is there any evidence that blood pressure reducing drugs, such as Ramapril, have any effect on causing or enhancing liver problems...??

Only your consultant can answer regarding your BP meds. I too have cirrhosis , in just 3 years I went from fatty liver to this, even though I lost some weight as advised. I wasnt impressed with the lack of information given so asked my GP to refer me to Liver Centre. He totally agreed especially as my bloods all looked normal. I was given a 3rd fibroscan then saw the Professor of this unit. I now had cirrhosis! BUT, in spite of this he advised me to go on a low carb diet. A specific diet that he explained would still remove fat from my liver and if I stuck to this way of eating he saw no reason for me to not still be around in 20years! I am following the Keto diet. Its complex at first, but as well as burning fat instead of carbs it has many other plus points. It recommended I bought a BP monitor, It can reduce BP. I am just into week 4. I got weighed on Tuesday as I wanted to know it was working - I have lost 14lb in 3 weeks! obviously water retention accounts for some, but I cant wait to go back on 23.1 . This way of eating is for NAFLD. Im still taking my bp meds, I also take a water tablet too. This is a question on my to ask list. The first 2 weeks are not brilliant, but normal. It took me a week to check every item of food in my fridge, freezer and cupboards! I was a food bank for a day lol. Some very ordinary foods are high in sugar, Heinz beans and tomatoe soup! My freezer is now full of green veg and meat and fish! If I had seen this Prof in the first place I could have reversed my fatty liver! It may be worth asking about this way of eating? Also prevents diabetes and can reduce cholesterol. After 3 weeks craving for sweet stuff goes too. Worth an ask? Hazelx

I was taking Ramipril all the way through the period of my liver disease and the liver doctors had no issues with it. I know that's not quite answering your question, but hope it helps all the same.
