ALT levels have gone up again

Just had my second liver function test. My ALT count in December 2017 was 26, on August 8th it was 137 and after the test I had last week it's now 294. GP is referring me for a scan, more blood tests and to see a liver specialist. My alkalinity levels (I think) have gone from 68 in December 2017 to 403 as of last week. I don't really know how bad these numbers are but I'm guessing they're not great.

What can I do in the meantime to keep my liver healthy? Are there vitamin or other supplements that might help? What foods should I focus on and what to avoid? I'm really unsure as to what to do next while I wait for the next set of test results.

Hi bambleweeny57

Welcome to the forum.

Your elevated liver bloods could indicate many things thats why it is very important to get interpretation and specific guidance from your own doctors.

An ultrasound scan will provide more information.

Regarding diet, we do have a general publication on our website 'Diet and liver disease' which explains the importance of keeping nutritionally well.

If you are found to have a liver condition, there are some special considerations you may need to make in your diet to stay nutritionally well and to help to manage your condition. Some of these are specific to certain liver diseases, others relate to how advanced your liver disease is. We therefore always suggest that people should discuss their specific dietary needs with their own doctors in the first instance.

We would also suggest you discuss the use of any supplements or specific vitamins with your own doctors who are best placed to safely advise.

If you are diagnosed with a liver condition, there is a huge amount of useful general information on our website

We hope you find the forum a supportive place to visit.

I finally got an appointment for an ultrasound next week but the soonest I can see a liver specialist at the hospital is end of November. Dreading the outcome of the scan but need to know what's going on.

" vitamin or other supplements "

Just a way of saying untested medication! and most of it is processed by our livers.

Wait for your diagnosis and then get your Drs advice.

A lot of those vitamins or other supplements can stress a damaged liver.
