Hello everyone, I hope you all are well as you can be... I wanted to ask if any of you were told by your doctor, Hepatologist you can only eat pasteurized eggs? My husband doesn’t let me eat them unless they are pasteurized and of course I argue and say they don’t have to be lol... BTW- I’m 16 months post Tx and love eggs!

If the truth be known I've been guilty of eating mayonnaise. This is strictly a no no as mayonnaise is made with raw eggs. I think I did it once in error, I had no side effects so continued to use occasionally.
While I realise that our immune systems have been turned down in order to prevent rejection, I still think we need to allow some bad germs to get through now and again, so that our immune systems can still recognise and destroy bacteria and other germs, even in it's weakened state.
Thank you for your reply Richard, you are so right about having little germs every now and then, I’m too guilty of having mayonnaise a couple times since my husband watches me like a hawk when it comes to my eating habits lol.... when we go out for breakfast my eggs have to be scrambled, yuks! I like them over easy but he says no and then I get mad, same with salads, can’t have salads only at home, no cold cuts either! Is it really going to hurt if I have them every now and then? Don’t get me wrong, i love my new liver and don’t want to do anything to harm him but he gets hungry too lol... I just wanted to know if my husband is being to hard on me? Thank you again Richard.
Your husband is just being very protective, which is really very nice as it shows just how much he cares and loves you.
On the liver transplant thingy it says about things that we should avoid, I think the answer is really in the word "avoid", but it doesn't say forbidden. I really liked and miss blue cheese. I have been so tempted in the past, but just ask myself if it's really worth the risk.
Having had that liver transplant has changed my life enormously. I value each day and I've been given this gift in order to go out there and enjoy life to the maxx. I'm not going to lock myself away inside a bubble just in case. I think being sensible is the order of the day. I still go out in the sunshine and I don't care if people laugh at me cause I'm not wearing shorts or a tee shirt, but jeans and a long sleeved shirt I still eat the odd fired egg, or boiled with a runny yoke. I think we are all a lot tougher then we think we are. I can be out there in public on a crowded train with people full of coughs and colds and still not catch anything.
I may live in Stoke-on-Trent, but I refuse to be like Robbie Williams, and walk around with a bottle of hand sanitiser every where I go.
Speaking of hand sanitizer, I have to carry one with me all the time! Our lives will never be like before but pretty darn close I should say! I feel 💯 better than before my surgery, food tasteroide horrible when I was sick, lost over 50 pounds, now food tastes good and I want to eat lol... I already gained 25 back but they said no more gaining 😡.... I’m glad you are doing great and not worring a lot about them germs, they are everywhere and can’t completely avoid them! Thanks Richard, have a great weekend, I’m my way to have lunch but no eggs or salad lo 😞
I went to my 6 month post transplant appointment and asked about food restrictions and they said all lifted other than grapefruit, Seville oranges and raw shellfish. I eat everything now but always In moderation.
Thought I’d mention regards eggs, my dietician told me that the restriction on them had been lifted and I could enjoy my runny boiled eggs & soliders😊and eat mayo from a jar.Looking forward to my 6 months post TX to get back to a proper steak sorry all you non meat eaters on here.
Eggs made to use commercially bought mayonnaise & other egg based products that you buy from supermarkets are made with pasteurised eggs in the UK, unless they are made in a different country & we import them e.g.Holland where this is not the case & is why they was a huge recall of egg based products back in March
If you are buying eggs always by one's with the British Red Lion on them as this means that they have been vaccinated against salmonella.
Hubby was told that he only had to avoided unpasteurised milks, cheeses pates, medium rare steaks & eating from hot held buffets for the 1st 3 months post tx to limit the risk of food poisoning bacteria developing.
Hope this info helps, I have to teach egg safety to my students as part of their ks3&4 food & catering curriculum
Very good info adelou, thank you! my husband believes I have to fallow all rules as far as food goes for the rest my life lol... I’m 16 months post transplant and I think I can break the rules every now and then, yeah right, try telling him that lol.. bless his heart, he means well.
Thank you adelou, great info, I do appreciate you taking the time to send it, my husband said he will check it out later today, he also said, Hes just fallowing instructions from the ( Mayo Clinic) lol... I will call the clinic tomorrow and ask if I have to eat pasteurized eggs for the rest of my life like he says, I believe he’s just being over protective! Thank you again and happy days ahead! Xxx
All mayonnaise purchased from supermarkets is always heat treated. If it isn't it would perish and couldn't be stored at room temperature before opening the jar. Because it isn't acidic it would be heated to a much higher temperature than whats required for pasteurization. Mayo with raw eggs will only keep for any hour or two
