Looking for the positive...

Hello all from the US! I have been reading through the board for a couple of months and finally thought I might post. As way of introduction, I am a 36 year old male from Southern California. I have had a troubled past with alcohol that seems to have caught up to me. When I started drinking about 15 years ago or so at College it was the typical binge drinking weekends. When I graduated I dialed back my drinking but over the last few years I began to drink heavily daily. I was a light smoker as well as having an average BMI of 30. About four months ago or so I had some heart palpitations that landed me in urgent care. This kicked off a deep dive into the internet and finding all the possible horrible things that may have occurred to my body. I stopped drinking and started a healthy regime of excercise and healthy eating. A week I had a first round of blood tests. ALT and ALP were normal, as was my platelets, bilirubin and MCV. AST was the only one outside of normal. I also had an ultrasound that showed nothing more than a fatty liver. A couple of months went by and I maintained my new healthy lifestyle and had a second of blood tests and everything was better, including AST. During this time I lost about 40 pounds and had a couple of minor blips with alcohol (about 10 glasses of wine spread over three nights). Anxiety got the better of me and looked around for a private Fibroscan. I had the appointment yesterday and that’s when the wheels fell off. I had 12.0 kpa and a 360 cap... the place I had it done was a bit dodgy and I didn’t really get a through explanation. As I tried to remain composed I had a terrible anxiety attack that landed me in the ER... I have since returned home and have been trying to process the previous day. My GP is out of town until next week. I have a follow up ultrasound next week along with an appointment with a therapist. I needed to put this all down and breathe. Not sure how to go or feel, other than terrible and resigned to the results. Still a bit surprised at how poorly the Fibroscan was, in light of all the good blood work and ultrasound. I hope you all are well and thanks for for reading thus far... wish you all the best.

Regards,

Walker

Where alcohol is deemed the cause of liver damage a kPa score of 12 on the normal fibroscan charts indicates F3 fibrosis so still very reversible at this stage. CAP measures the fat in the liver which you already knew was fatty. Fibroscan can give inaccurate readings of higher than reality if there is ongoing inflammation and even if you've eaten before the test so there are lots of possible positives.

Fatty liver due to alcohol isn't going to improve overnight, it took years to develop and is probably going to take a good while to reverse BUT you will need to continue with your healthy living regime and can't fall into the trap of one or two drinks .......... your liver is suffering you need to help it before it does get worse.

Have a read at the BLT page on alcohol and it's effects on the liver - britishlivertrust.org.uk/li...

All the best, Katie

Thanks Katie for the positive feedback. I was under the impression that F3 was not reversible, and might possibly progress without added insult. I hope you’re right! I completely understand that I cannot drink even the slightest amount. My focus is regaining as much health as I can. Thanks for the link as well. Best wishes- Justin

The BLT has a quote on their page saying that even early cirrhosis is now thought to be reversible so keep working at the positive lifestyle changes and give it some time.

Hi, just thought I would let u know that the 360 cap indicates slight fatty liver - average is 250. Mine was 350 and they don't seem too concerned - all blood work normal except elevated GGT and also ultrasound except mri which showed it, however the other measurement was average for me.. Probably don't think so much of it until you see your doctor and they can determine what may be going on.

Kayte-

I had found that anything above 285 was considered S3- significant fatty liver... hoping I am wrong and you’re right.
