Is Back pain part of this dreadful disease of Cirrohis?

I noticed that most people before being diagnosed with liver or spleen problems have a lot of back pain. Many doctors think it is just stress of not feeling well but I don't think so, I think back pain was the first sign that something is wrong with the liver. Anybody else has the same problem? What do you think?

I have back pain when I know something is wrong.

what do you mean? Are you saying when you have back pain that is a sign that something is wrong? Do you think this is a part of the liver disease? Because doctor seems to think it is mostly stressed from worrying about your health.

Yes that's how it started. At the time I was not stressed.

I never noticed back pain any worse when I had cirrhosis it was usually being down to being swollen with water or not sleeping or being sat down too long

thanks, jojo

I relate my back pain to my cirrhosis. As I have back pain as a warning to say cirrhosis is playing up.

Back pain and shoulder pain def comes up as a symptom of ALD. Especially in the right shoulder. Spleenomegaly can cause pain in the left shoulder as well. Not at all saying that is the cause of your pain but it does come up a lot ive found on the internet. As well, my Dr. Has mentioned to me that it can be a possible cause

Sorry Nihad but liver inflammation due what ?

thanks, phoenix, I thought I heard that but my doctor said most people don't, he said usually it is stress worrying about their health. I guess it depends on the individual.Did your doctor want to know if you had back pain?

Have you actually been diagnosed with cirrhosis or other liver related problems?

I know that was true with my ex. The back pain was the worst part of the disease for him. He even had fluid buildup under his wings. He was not good to me for sure but I would never wish this on anyone.

Hey Sophia , It was i who asked him, I would get a pain that would go on for a week or 2 and when at my appointment I asked him what could be causing it. He said he was not sure but that It could be due to diverted pain from the liver disease. Stress would def not help it. This I know. If it persists more than a few days talk to your doctor

Thanks,

I am getting a sharp pain in the middle and upper back..like a cramping, they did an x-ray and didn't find anything. when I got the x-ray I wasn't having any liver issues at least I didn't know I was. I haven't been diagnosed with anything because of my liver enzymes have been in range. I can't get a fibroscan or any scan until my levels are over the range. I use to have pain in the liver area ,now...only the back pain...my doctor always say it is stress.

Hi Sophia I’m sure your doctor knows what is going on I think when you have your blood tests and nothing shows up I think you will be ok you should try to stop getting stressed out about it if something was wrong I’m sure you would have been told my husband was told he had liver disease after his first blood test and he now awaiting the phone call to have his transplant doctors would tell you if there was something to worry about I hope this helps

My husband has very bad pain in his shoulders and although we have not had his results from consultant yet we pretty much already know he has cirrhosis. A couple of years before he ended up with acute liver failure he had an MRI scan for his back pain. Now I can not find the report from it but I remember vaguely something about it saying the spleen was very big.

I do however wonder why they did not act then if they saw it then but then again I could have that somehow wrong. xx

dizti, when the spleen is enlarged there is nothing they can do about it but remove it. They really don't like to remove it unless it is causing a lot of problems. I am having bad pain on both my left and right upper middle back, mostly left side hurts...a stabbing plan even when I don't move. My doctor says it should hurt when you breathe if it is the spleen. She had me to do deep breathing as he pressed my abdomen and back..I didn't feel pain when i breathe and he said I would. oh well, I guess it is the waiting game. I really think it is spleen/liver pain.

My spleen is over twice the size of normal and I dont get pain while breathing. Its frustrating to be told a test cannot be done until things potentially worsen. In Canada Fibroscans are private (not covered by health care) so we can book them any time on our own accord at a fee of 100 dollars. Further what can be frustrating is when blood panels show everything is normal yet we feel otherwise. My fibroscan result was 58.9 which is stage four fibrosis. However my blood tests are normal and my health is better than it has been in years. There are many people here in desperate need of Liver transplants but because their MELD scores are good due to good liver blood panels they are not granted them. I would suggest trying a different doctor or talking to a hepatologist if you are still concerned. While it could be unrelated you deserve to know and it sounds like your Doctor is sluffing it off.

PS if you take a fibroscan do not eat or drink at least four hours before the test. They say 2 hours but there is so much coming out now about how meals falsely increase KPA on fibroscans. I ate 2 hours before and drank liquid right till the moment of the test. Im going to do a retest and fast after midnight the night before to see what changes.

Take care !

thanks, Phoenix, I am in the USA, and we do all scans under insurance, I didn't think you guys paid for any health care in Canada. Usually, with your score, something is off in the bloods depending on the cause.....low platelets...AST higher than ALT but in range after moving the source that causing the problems. Thanks for the info..good luck
