Hi everyone. My dads been to the doctors today and has been told hes jaundice in his eyes, and has high haemoglobin. The doctor is referring him for a scan and told him its could possibly be very serious. Hes worried sick as are we all. His symptoms have been dark tea coloured urine, itchy skin, not eating all his meals. Has anyone had these symptoms? And what was the diagnosis?

Hi Sam. I can't answer your questions but would just say wait until all the test results are back before becoming too worried. The best thing is that you contacted this wonderful site. it was a godsend to me & lots of people will give you lots of support.xx
Hi, You really do need to wait for the test results to come back before getting overly worried, although I appreciate that isn't all that easy. From what you describe does look like they are related to the liver. However, that isn't to say that there is any long term liver damage either in place or occurring. There are many things that can cause some acute, but very temporary, injury to the liver. I had similar symptoms reacting to some medication I was taking at the time some years back. When I stopped taking the medication everything cleared up with no lasting damage.
No one here will be able to say whether or not that will be the case with your dad. I do though hope it gives you a little bit of comfort until the results come back and you can get a firm diagnosis. Even then, and even if there is some long term liver damage, it doesn't have to be an insurmountable problem. I therefore send you and your dad all my best wishes and good luck.
Thankyou so much. Hes a healthy man normally has a bit of high blood pressure sometimes but other than that no issues. Roll on next week and ill be keeping my fingers crossed for more positive news!
Hope you get good news. Take care Lynne
This could be polycythaemia vera and be related to the bone marrow rather than a liver problem.
I was going to say exactly what Osidge said, high hematocrit with high hemoglobin can be polycythaemia vera. The way it affects the liver to cause jaundice it causes blood clots, if one occurs within the liver it can cause jaundice, ect. With that said high hemoglobin or hematocrit can also come from dehydration, that's the largest reason for seeing it in practice. High Hem can also come from lungs or kidney issues, which the kidneys help control hemoglobin. Is that the only lab that's high, because I'd imagine with jaundice, he'd have a high bilirubin and possibly ALT and AST. Have to stay calm, yes much harder to say than do. However, the upcoming tests are going to be the only way to figure out what's going on.
Hi
Hope all goes well.
Went to my Dr today. She said I've not got osteopenia or osteoporosis, the pain I'm getting all over is fibromyalgia plus my liver and anything else that's thrown at me. There's someone worse off, though. Love to you all xxxx
