Hi, 2 yrs ago my brother was admitted to hospital and treated for vitamins deficticy due to his excess drinking he was offered help but declined as he said he could cut down himself this he did according to him he dident go out till 4 pm and came home 12pm this carried on for 2 yrs then he had a fall and went to the doctor who did blood tests and he was again addmitted to hospital his tummy and legs were full of fluid and was then diagnosed with advanced cirrhosis of the liver he has had his tummy drained and was sent home with lots of meds over this time he only wanted to talk to doctors with me present there is no other family for him and I love him so I took this on gladly wanting to help him he was to get support at home but was assessed and was told he didn't need it once home he got confused taking his meds I live 20 miles away but went to see him most days I raised concerns he wasent managing his meds but the only thing they could suggest was blister packs but this was no help with his baclfon and lactose he was very confused shaky the result he was found semi conscious after falling in the house and lying all night readmitted to hospital in a very bad way by the time I got there he was having seizures then lapsing into a comotosed state I excplained about his meds several times before they thought it may have been caused by his meds he was in there for 2 weeks had a brain scan and was being advised he would be fit to come home at 3 pm at 5 pm I got a ph9ne call he had taken a turn for the worse and was in a bad way when I got there he looked awful and had a strange mottle red colour spreading accross his tummy they had drawn round it to see how far it was spreading the doctor came to talk to me and asked about cardiac arrest and resusatation I said yes he then went on to èxcplain why they wouldent recommend doing this my brother was awake and as far as I could think following the conversation I then asked about his brain scan and he excplained his brain had shrunk causing the start of dementia and forgetfulness but he pulled round and was treated with antibiotics and other meds he had to have lactose to stop the toxic going into his bloods he was assessed by the op and she recommended long time care plan this was also the view of his doctor and the nursing staff on the ward it however the social people decided he dosent need this he came home with a short term care agency coming in twice a day to encourage him to do things and although he can sometimes he dose sometimes miss his meds and it was excplained to him the importance of eating a high protein diet and to eat little and often but he dosent take things in he will only eat tomatoe soup and jellies I have bought and cooked several meals for him I find them in the bin he has no appetite and apart from his tummy I can see him going down hill they put care call in with guardian response but have stopped the carers I just don't know what is going to happen no one has excplained his condition to me he was sent home with meds and dispite his memory condition they haven'ttold me what they are for and what to look out for next sorry for the long post just don't know where to go for help I'm heart broken for him as I know the reason for his drinking he is 71 and only has me hubby helps as well but he has heart condiions and is having treatment prostrate cancer at the minit so it'
