Coming home soon

My partner is due out of hospital soon but have seen him today & I'm a little concerned. He has developed quite bad shaking. He's hasn't shaken before so I'm just wondering if this is yet another "Sympton" of his condition. The shaking is mainly in his hands & arms.

Have you seen the doctors checking him for a condition called Asterixis? - they will get your partner to outstretch his arms with wrists extended and fingers pointing upwards. The hands might start to 'flap' and it can be an indicator of hepatic encephalopathy. Lots of videos on line if you type in asterixis to compare your partners shake.

My hubby has a definite tremor in both his hands which is most evident when he is gripping something like holding a knife and fork. He doesn't 'flap' though like some of the videos of asterixis.

He's had encephalopathy before but didn't shake. He actually did mention earlier in the week about the doctors asking him to stretch out his arms. I will speak to a doctor tomorrow about Asterixis. He does have a slight tremor like your husband whilst eating but today he was dozing in a chair with his arms on the rests & his hands were very shaky. I don't think he flaps as such but the shaking is worse since his admission to hospital.

many thanx

He's on lactulose. He has just rung from hospital to say he's coming home later today so will have to see what medication they give him. I have been trying to ring the ward (no-one answering) cos yesterday he said doctor told him that when he was ready for discharge they would talk us both through his progress etc.

Thank you but change of plan. Yesterdays kidney function blood test came back slightly abnormal. Reducing fluid intake to rectify sodium levels has had an effect so not coming home. Has to have tested again on Sunday & if improved then can come home Monday. Fingers crossed.
