Hi, my son been tested for AIH at the minute... Liver bloods elevated ALT.... 70

ALP......74

Bilirubin 16

SGP....... 24

Going for a liver biopsy after Xmas ... Looking online I'm concerned that the bloods are not too highly elevated to start treatment ... ANA antibody test also positive... Thanks

The purpose of the biopsy will be threefold;

Firstly to confirm if possible the diagnosis of AIH

Secondly to assess the degree - if any - of liver fibrosis (scarring)

Thirdly to check there are no additional simultaneous liver conditions.

I don't think you need to worry that they will delay treatment based on blood levels of enzymes. It's more the case that they want confirmation if possible and to be sure the correct medications are prescribed - as the level of scarring can affect which drugs can be used.

The good news is that AIH responds very well to treatment (immunosuppression) and once treatment is established and enzymes get back into the normal range - the liver has a good chance to recover.

Hope that helps,

Best of luck.
