CHILD-PUGH or MELD? Gp is unfamiliar with both in UK

What is child pugh c converted to the MELD score, please?

Not sure if it helps but I have extracted the following from a somewhat technical Medscape article (from medscape.com/viewarticle/51...

"Based on the available data, we propose to keep using the CTP score for individual assessment of liver disease in daily clinical practice. On the contrary, the MELD score may be best suited as a verifiable system in prioritizing candidates for LT ..."

In other words, the scores seem designed to do different things. I wouldn't worry too much that you GP is unfamiliar with these scores but do talk to your specialist about what one or both might mean for you in terms of treatment.

Not sure if they are directly comparable. In the UK the UKELD assessment is used. Your gp or consultant should be able to explain what criteria are used to amass the score, Phil

Child-Pugh and MELD are both ‘scoring’ systems used as a means to give a very general description of the clinical state of patients with cirrhosis of the liver, and to indicate the severity of the condition.

Both use similar information to calculate a score but unfortunately you cannot translate one to the other. These scores are usually used by specialist in assessing liver injury and this may be why your GP has not heard of them.

Have you been given a score, or have you had your liver function tested?

Hiya, sorry its taken 5 months to type this out, never been a good typist, lol.

I was given a child pugh c score by consultant at leeds hospital a few months after a 6 week stay in a ward for having about 10 stones worth of fluid (ascites) that needed draining and had to be monitored for a few weeks afterwards as it was touch and go mortality wise apparently (i didnt feel that bad though surprisingly). I,m not sure what they call them but i had every test possible whilst there and a few more afterwards that involved something being inserted via both ends if that sounds familiar...

I never went back apart from a few ambulance trips here and there and a consultation visit my mum insisted on. Im a "floater" child pugh c was what the last consultant told us and that was in laymens terms! My mum is a retired teacher and she didnt understand most of it.

Its 15 points on meld score i think.
