Well folks... at the end of another month. It is quite unbelievable how this year is whizzing by!

Here we are about to head right into October... Season of mists... and all that goes with the Season!

How has it gone? Have you reached your targets, made those goals....?

I do know, that many of you have made those goals and beyond, and that some of you, like me, have taken a step back here and there and re-assessed what we had planned.

I did manage to up my distance... and managed a decent 10 K, but having done that I also realised I needed to pull back quite drastically...so goals were adapted, strength work and yoga took precedence and apart from a sloooooow Race for Life last Saturday, I have not been running. Strength work is ongoing and I am beginning to feel the impact... so I am quite satisfied with this Quest and shall be setting new goals in next month's Quest!

We would all love to know how your Quest has evolved, so please, do post your replies and let us know your successes and your set backs. It is great to be adaptable and to challenge ourselves, yes, but also to be kind to ourselves when we need to be.

I am off to give out the Graduation badges in Couch next month, ( brilliant job), but I have loved hosting the Quest this month, thank you for letting me share your adventures.

I cannot wait to check out your replies !

See you on the next Quest ? x

I have kept to the plan! I'm now off the injury couch and gradually building up to running continuously again.

The physio strongly recommended I do short intervals when I re-started.

I opened with a pair of runs with 20:40 intervals, am currently on 30:30 intervals, and plan to build towards longer ones, probably via a few runs from C25K.

I know I can do 5km in 30 mins. I did that back in August.

I'm going to work towards doing 5km again, but at a slower less stressful pace, which obviously means a longer duration. There's no rush.

Slow and steady is perfect... and really gets us to where we want to be!

Very well done on your recovery plan...just go gently and listen to your body!

All went well... no plan runs missed and the odd recovery jog thrown in for good measure. Slightly less miles than last month as I had a recovery week and build back up, but that’s not important at this stage. Looking at hitting HM distance 3 times over the next six weeks now, exciting times.

I completed my second 10k run last Sunday which was under 60 minutes! 58 so I took a whole 4 minutes off from the first time :) Also I was able to run 4 times last week which was my goal.

Unfortunately on Monday I got up and felt really sick, and have slept through most of this week so-far! Definitely no running for me. I'm hoping to go for an easy one by the end of the week? I also hope that one week of no running + having been sick won't have done any harm!!

Oldfloss profile image

It won't..it really does take a lot longer to lose our fitness. Make sue you feel completely well, take it steady and do enjoy! Well done on that under 60 minute 10K!

Hi Floss,

Well done last Saturday.Lovely pic.⭐️πŸ’ͺπŸ™

Learned a great lesson on the Sept Quest, after a long lay off, 3 months, use C25k week1 run 1 as a tester of your fitness assessment and where to restart.Don’t restart with 25km/ week.πŸ™ˆπŸ˜

I am back over on C25k with Laura,Jan and IannodaTruffe for number five.

Hope my self inflicted niggles settle down as I restrengthen and complete by end of Nov.

Stay strong and do stay safe my friend ! I shall watch out for you on C25K!

The Magic Plan has been a bit up and down for me.

Week 3 went well after a torrid week 2. On the Friday before my trip to North Wales I ran a really enjoyable slow 7k along the bridleways, through the local nature reserve, across the fields and back home through the woods. Whilst away, I managed to fit in the remaining 2 runs - a 3.5k and a 5k - in the truly wonderful surroundings of Pen LlΕ·n, running without music and just soaking in the ambience. Thankfully we managed to dodge the local lockdowns.

Week 4 is proving to be a mixed bag. I'm now a little behind my planned schedule. On Monday I struggled with my 4k run, and today I manged the 8k run, although it wasn't the enjoyable experience I was hoping for.

Am I sleeping any better? Well - yes a bit.

And I was annoyed because I forgot to book my lunchtime swim sessions and I couldn't get a slot yesterday. Ah well - I will just have to wait until tomorrow

I am enjoying my running a bit more now, and am relatively relaxed after my holiday. I may just have sent my Meh! gemlins packing πŸ‘ΏπŸ˜πŸ’ͺ

All sounding quite positive... and on track... despite set backs with swimming! I did my Race for Life at Criccieth and was on the Llyn a few times last week, swimming near Nefyn :) Glorious...thank goodness at the moment Gwynedd is still open!

I think with more sleep and a relaxed attitude, those gremlins may be getting well and truly left behind!

Well done you!

Thank you!

Hubby and I really loved the LlΕ·n. He's is a Cardiff boy but it was the first time in that part of the country.

Running there was a privilege. My 5k was a loop from our cottage just outside Llanengan towards Llaneigan then to Porth Neigwl and back to Llanengan. Wonderful!😁

Hi Floss

My final scamper for the month was a treadmill-assisted 23'47" (not) parkrun on Saturday - feels a bit of a cheat to log them, and it still wasn't good enough to nick the age-graded top spot - beaten by 0.15% by the usual suspect! If parkrun is not a race, that means a (not) parkrun is, doesn't it?

Thanks for looking after us this month. Onwards and upwards!!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate10β€’ in reply toUpTheStanley

Ha ha.... I love that Not park run... a race! No cheating at all... a run is a run...and I think that is one heck of a time!

Onward and upward indeed my friend, although the upward is a bit of a slog for me right now :) Thanks you! x

Thank you for looking after us so well Oldfloss. Like you say, September has gone so fast.

Boxes ticked:

Just finished week 6 of the magic plan.

Completed exercises to sort out Achilles tendinitis to reach pain free running. πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

Lost 1kg of 3kg weight loss target. But forthcoming birthday may reverse that. πŸŽ‚πŸ§πŸ°

Stayed virus free

But the loveliest thing about September was the birth of a great nephew, who I got to meet today. πŸ‘Ά

October here I come!

The month got off to a slow start due to illness, so I have dropped the 30 day challenge and the yoga - hope to pick both back up in October. But otherwise all goals achieved!

I kept doing 3 runs a week, now up to week 5 of the magic plan with two 8k runs under my belt.

Despite getting off track in week 1, I've made up the distance and am now ahead of target on LeJog5 - managed 85 miles in my first month (including an amazing-to-me 50 miles of running!) so am hoping I'll be able to say I'm 10% there very soon.

I've managed to adapt my running for the winter, getting kitted up and working out a way to fit in two daylight runs and one evening run.

And yesterday I managed to achieve my final goal of getting in my first ever running club run yesterday, which I really enjoyed and surprised myself by how fast I could run. I have now joined the club so I will have company and challenge on my evening runs. Onto October!

Thanks for all the encouragement OldFloss, have fun pinning on the shiny badges!

It's been great to run along with Oldfloss and everyone this September.

Much learned! Much achieved and survived!

Yoga goal of 'more often than not' achieved...one thing to welcome in the darker evenings is yoga by candlelight

Being up and out on the station 'run' has, as I hoped, supported my actual running... although sometimes I've needed to just crawl straight home.

Average daily step count 7530 so comfortably over 6500

New places - 5

... the 15 minute tidying/sorting sessions... ahem, 3/10 (it does get increasingly hard once you've dealt with the low-hanging fruit)

... weight loss... well I felt a bit despondent this morning but then checked my plan for the month and I had completely forgotten how high my starting weight was so I am at least down on that.

October here I come!

Oldfloss profile image
OldflossAdministratorGraduate10β€’ in reply toGoogleMe

Sorry for the late reply!

Great positive post and Yoga by candle light... that sounds wonderful. I shall try that!

You have clearly achieved a lot and learned a lot and achieved many of your goals!

Weight loss... will happen... my weight gain is painfully slow!

We trimmed our Maples this week... as you say... the low bits are really easy! You have the fruit too!

Surviving is the thing my friend ... into October we go! x

Hi Floss. The quest really worked out, thanks. Another hill run PB, 12k PB last week and weight under control. Planning a 14k tomorrow (after a lot of prevarication). All too good to last but it has been great after months of hassle. Keeping the rehab runs up just in case!! πŸ™‚

I reached my 60 minute target in early September. Since then I have had twinges in my knees so I've been trying to go slow and steady. 3 runs a week: 20 mins, 30 mins, 60 mins (nice and slow), and 2 clear days between every run. Now doesn't feel like the time to kick on to 10k, but to keep things ticking over.

Hi Oldfloss,

I can't believe we are into October already. I was hoping to run alternate days this week as I am on annual leave. I managed a lovely 10k run on Friday, followed by intervals/fartleks on Sunday. I missed Tuesday though as I had a small area of my calf muscle feeling tender from a HIIT session over the weekend. Although it wasn't painful to walk on I thought I better have a day off from running as I had planned to do hill repeats. I had to take the car to the garage this morning so decided to run back home. I had to check the distance on google maps this morning as I didn't think the direct route would be long enough. A slight detour meant I made just short of 6k rather than the 4k direct. I knew the route would mainly be uphill on the detour but as I had only driven that way before I hadn't realised just quite how steep and long the hill was. Strava states it is 40m elevation gain in less than 1k (I think Strava is lying to me on that one as it certainly felt worse than that!!! Total elevation of the entire run was 101m! Nottingham is surprisingly hilly in places). I did managed to get the 5th fastest time overall on that segment though so am really happy. I just missed out on a 5k PB by 12 seconds even with the uphill section. I am aiming to go a long slow run on Saturday but I fear it will be dodging the torrential rain drops. I suppose I could leave the run till Sunday but I didn't really want to run on my birthday (it ends with 0 this year but supposedly it is the year that life begins....) It will be significantly better than my last birthday as I am now a runner and have a fantastic running family on the forum.

LEJOG is plodding along nicely and a wonderful trip to Hardwick Hall added a good amount to the tally. Yoga and strength work continue well. In preparation for winter I have treated myself to some warmer running clothes and a foam (torture instrument) roller. I will be going to get some trail shoes next week as that is my birthday present from my parents. I was hoping to get those this week but a custom made exhaust system for a 29 year old classic car (my only car) is a priority purchase that I could have done without but is essential.

I'm looking forward to joining everyone on the October quest. Happy running everyone.

Hello Oldfloss!

Thank you so much for your Quest hosting, and all your wonderful posts. You've done a great job.

I'm pretty happy with how September turned out for me. Although I didn't run much, only twice a week, I *did* get out there. I really hadn't been sure I would, given the changes: horrid weather, shorter days and being back at work.

Several runs turned out to be memorable: the one where trying for my second 10k turned into 12k, the one where Strava went bonkers so I gave up on stats in favour of chats and photos, and the first proper rainy one, 40 minutes.

Best of all, there was the pink-hued one, where everything came together and I ran not 10k, but 10 miles. I'd never have believed that was possible, and I was so touched by forum reactions to my post.

Thank you to everyone for their support, and here's to October, which also happens to be my birthday month :)

Speaking of scampering, I went out to my garden last night to cover plants because of a frost warning and there was Peter Rabbit--on his way out following CHOMPING more of my pea plants at the base. I had wondered what sort of animal had been at it and now I knew--and now I know from which direction he comes so I may resort to shoring up my fencing. Grrr! Anyway, although I am still on my POT of tea today at this late hour, I have met my goals set out in the first of the month gone by and thank you, OFloss, for encouraging us!
