Hi, Please can someone give me some advice. I went to the doctor to ask for a screening as my sister has BC and they seem to not want to refer me. They have written to the screening clinic to ask their advice, but can I insist that I get refereed?

It all depends on the type of breast cancer your sister has. I have triple neg so they did no want to screen my sister, however if your sister carried the Braca 1 and 2 genes then they would have screened you as this is the breast cancer gene. This should have been explained to you. I certainly would not go panicking as if they thought there was a danger to you they would have referred you.

Thank you for your reply. Nothing was really explained to me as unfortunately I don't know what type of breast cancer it is, (a lot of "not nice" family history and won't tell me..) the doctor knows this too.

Hi , I had breast cancer as did my mum and her sister (my aunt) none of us have been tested for the braca gene as we all have different types - the oncologist thinks there maybe some genetic predisposition or it may be we are just unlucky , however there are no other identifiable genes that have been found yet so no tests to be done. My sister saw her gp and explained the situation and she was referred for an early mammogram aged 47, but the gp said he wouldn't have referred her much earlier as younger women have much more dense breasts and mammograms are not as effective.

So if your family breast cancer history is not Braca + and you are still fairly young , I think they will just expect you to be vigilant and make sure you check your breasts regularly and get to know how they normally feel, unfortunately there is not much else they can do.

Hi my sister also has bc she has just started treatment. My sisters is genetic though we had the test done 10 years ago, she had the gene and I didn’t. Is there a history in your family?
