I sustained a tbi in 6/2015 after a riding accident . I am very keen to start driving a car again now and wondered how best to go about proving I am now fit to drive - is there somewhere that makes a practical off road assessment - any information greatly appreciated thanks Liz

Yes, the dvla will do an assessment to see if you are able to adapt. I had to go out in a dual controlled car with two assessors, on beside me and one in the back

Good luck x

I arranged it through Disability Action I think. They had a list of driving instructors on their books that I could use. They said they normally did this with people who had been driving and who needed to be checked by the dvla to see if they could continue to do so. I

Good luck

Hi, I sustained my TBI July 1/88. I was in a coma for about 3 weeks. I had to take my Drivers Licence over because if I was involved in an accident the accident could be blamed on me even if the accident wasn’t my fault. When I was retested I had to do just do the driving test. I was worried but passed with fewer demerits than when I was 16. I was 25 when I took my Drivers the second time. I now have a University Degree and my Professional Drivers Licence (1A). To meet me on the street, you would never know I have a TBI. The problem is for the last 32 years I have been in the Work Force trying to be a regular non head injured individual. Over the past 32 years I’ve had 60 plus jobs. I’ve just been tested by a Dr to find out why I’ve been going from job to job so often. It was after doing several tests they determined I have a Head Injury. After 32 years I’m finally able to collect for my disability. I’m tired and frustrated with nobody believing me when I say I have one. My advice to you is to get your disability documented so that you are entitled to monies and help that you will require sooner or later.
