I have recently been diagnosed with Osteoporosis in my spine & Osteopenia in hips after being on AdcalD3 for over 10 years. A recent xray shows no compression fractures but I have stenosis & end plate sclerosis in the majority of my spine. GP has advised that medication is only prescribed if Osteoporosis is in hip. She has written for advice & guidance but NICE guidelines seem to contradict what she's saying. I can't afford for my spine to get any worse as mobility is already impacted & pain can be really quite bad. I am doing exercises from the ROS website but wonder if anyone has any advice. My scored in spine were below -2.5.

I've just Googled it - this is what came up ..."No, osteoporosis medication isn't only prescribed for osteoporosis in the hips; it's prescribed to address the condition and reduce fracture risk in any bones, including the spine and other areas, based on individual risk factors and bone density results. "
I hope you manage to get some better help & advice.
Thank you
I’m not a doctor but I’ve never heard anything so stupid. Pester GP (preferably another one) to refer you to a rheumatologist. Good luck.
that's insane. Not true at all. Maybe time to see another doctor.
Hi, having a diagnosis of Osteoporosis after being on vitamin D and calcium for 10 years must have been hugely disappointing.
Regarding your GP comments. This prescribing policy is something I am unaware of and cannot see any logic behind it. To me, it seems wrong, but it could be local prescribing guidelines. May I suggest you ask the Ros Nurse about what your GP said. Getting the appropriate medical treatment is important.
Have you seen your Dexa Report yourself? When I had my first DEXA scan and was diagnosed with Osteoporosis, the report advised the GP about excluding other causes of osteoporosis (myeloma, hyperparathyroidism, caealic disease, low vitamin D etc) and advised on appropriate treatment e.g. Aledronic Acid, Vitamin D 800Iu and Calcium supplements 800mg. I downloaded a copy of the report for myself. Do get these other causes excluded.
