hi all I’m new to this but need to ask have any of you suffered with stomach problems that have been excaserbated by taking Alendronic Acid 70mg x 1 weekly?

I was diagnosed with osteoporosis (think I’ve had it for years) a few months ago following a dexta scan ( sorry I haven’t got the results to hand). I also have other health conditions fibromyalgia being one of them. And kept being fobbed off by doctors when I complained about back pain. Until I moved home last year and this new doctor sent me for a dexta scan (I’d never heard of this scan before) even though I’ve lost two inches in height and need walking aids.

Anyhow this scan pointed to me having osteoporosis in lumba and osteopenia in the rest of back. I don’t want to bombard myself with too much information but my stomach (diverticulitis) will not clear up!. And now I’m thinking it’s these tablets!

Look forward to hearing from you

Thanks

Cate

I think if you're prone to digestive issues that Alendronic Acid can aggravate it. It's probably worth nagging your doctor for an alternative. I know getting GP appointments is difficult but probably worth pursuing. I take Alendronic Acid without any problems. I eat plenty of yoghurt and drink kefir to hopefully protect my stomach & up my calcium intake. So far do good or. I'm just lucky. Keep nagging the doc!

Hi conchology

Than you so much for your reply. And yes I am already taking omeprazole suffer with GERD, and suffer terribly with IBS.

Doctor gave me the Calichew D3 too I take daily. But will look into kefir drink as an alternative. I do eat plenty of yogurt.

Doctor did refer me to specialist team because of stomach pain and bloating had to endure intrusive procedures with nothing else showing for this new pain and bloating. It has had me worried so much so I was relieved to read about another members stomach problems and Alendronic Acid!

I finally have the answer. I can email the gp instead of face to face (sick of doctors at the moment with being on a merry go round), and ask her to change to a more stomach friendly alternative.

Thank you x

my mother has severe Gerd from taking those tablets for 10 years, so doctor just switched her to an annual infusion instead. Her Gerd is ok but she's on omeprazole and still has issues.

Hi Cleolove

I have ulcerative colitis and did have quite bad acid reflux (that seems to have stopped since I came off omeprazole). I take Binosto once weekly which is soluble AA and have had no problems.

hello there

Yes I was diagnosed with osteoporosis just over a year ago having had a few fractures which my doctor said shouldn’t be happening at my age of 61 at the time. After a dexa scan I was put on allendronic acid. I also have fibromyalgia and stomach issues. Yes I did start to feel sick taking them and I read that injections are better because they bypass the stomach. So whilst waiting to be seen by the rheumatologist my doctor put me on rosendronate which although it’s better I still have a few stomach issues. I have since spoken to rheumatologist and should be starting on injections anytime now. Go speak to your doctor and see what they can do. I hope you get this sorted out. I should also say I keep getting a swelling on my toe which blisters and dermatologist called it fixed drug reaction so it should stop once I start the injections too.

I found alendronic acid really affected my stomach so was put on annual injections instead. They have worked well. No side effects. I’ve had osteoporosis for s while now and six annual infusions with a year break after 3 years. My hips have improved too so do talk to your GP/consultsnt
