pain from osteoporosis?

my mum has osteoporosis and has bad back pain in the area were the osteoporosis is. I have read articles that it is possible to have pain without having a fracture. I’m looking for advice on what she can take for it as the doctor only wants to give her opiods which she’s refusing. Can anyone recommend anything.

I'm sorry for your mum. Is there a reason she won't use opioids? I have to have them, If she's worried about becoming addicted a great friend who's a Dr told me that if the body needs it, it will utilise it and you won't become addicted, it's when folk take it without needing it that they become addicted. I just thought I'd write that as it makes sense and I have to take Oxycodone morning and night and top up when necessary if with 5 mgs needed. If she won't take the opioids, she's a bit stuck, sometimes paracetamol then 2 hours later ibuprofen as a pattern throughout the day, obviously not any more than 8 paracetamol in a day but if you keep up the constant topping up it can help. I hope she gets some relief, pain is awful it takes up your whole life xx

I can only say if her back pain is very bad insist on an x-ray. I suffered for 3 weeks with horrendous acute back pain, no falls, bangs, nothing that started it and kept being told it was muscular. Turned out I had a vertebrae compression fracture at T9. They couldn't do anything but gave me morphine and oh my it helped. Like Rose rightly said if you need it you don't get addicted. I was worried about that but my GP said only if taken when not needed do you get addicted.

Your poor mum. They really ought to offer her an x-ray, particularly if this is relatively new onset pain. As for the drugs, I think it is quite personal. I can't tolerate codeine - very violent stomach upsets - and I tend to mix and match my painkillers (ibuprofen, paracetamol and aspirin). You need to be careful when and how they are mixed but I find it works for me. Good luck.
