Z Score standard deviation

Can someone tell me how I can have a Z score of -3.7

My understanding of statistics is the standard deviation is a spread of the total population with a range of -3, 0, 3. This covers 99.7% of the data. Does this mean that at -3.7 std i am in that tiny little end of the distribution tail. I find that hard to believe as I don‘t believe those levels of accuracy are achieved.

Can anyone with enlighten me please.

Do you have your t-scores and all your z-scores? Where does the -3.7 z-score relate to? I think you need to see the full context, rather than focus on one individual score, but at face value that does suggest that your bone density, at that site at least, may be significantly below average for your age. That assumes, of course, that no positioning or interpretation errors were made in the DEXA scan.

Thanks for your reply

yes have all that data and -3.7 was in 2010 since then things have significantly improved but my question is really about how can the calculations result in -3.7 std when the range stops at -3.0 std. its a stats question really.

In theory a stats range can go on ad infinitum. It means that your bone density was 3.7 standard deviations below average for age. I don't know how they initially calculate one standard deviation though. If 99.7% of the data is contained within the range -3.0 to +3.0, that means there will still be a very small amount of data outside that range.

That’s great thankyou. I guess it doesn’t matter really because it’s >-3.0 which indicates osteoporosis.
