Hiya, nearly 12 weeks healing from L1 compression fracture, next week will be my last physio appt I do my exercises three times daily and have been going on the occasional walk now the weather is starting to be kinder to us!! I have been doing light household chores but was told no hoovering, ironing or mopping to be honest I don't miss the last two🙂😂 but was wondering when I could run the hoover round again it is new a cordless one that I haven't had the chance to use yet😂. I'm awaiting a DXA Scan so not sure if I've got osteoporosis/Osteopenia my frax score was intermediate range. I spoke to a lovely nurse on the ROS and she advised I should be on meds but have to wait for dentist to check my teeth first. This is all new to me as I've never broken a bone before, it just happened by getting up off a chair😒 Thanks in advance for any info

I would probably follow the advice of your physiotherapist although I have a Dyson stick vacuum and find it very light and easy to use. I also have another one (a VAX blade, pet and car) that we bought when we thought the Dyson had reached the end of its life that is such a pain to use, the battery charges separately and is a nuisance to get out of its holder etc so that involves a lot of bending and tugging to get it out of its holder and into the vacuum cleaner so the one I take off the wall and use is much easier than the one I have to faff about with.

I found this Margaret Martin YouTube the other day and she talks about vacuuming which might be of interest

It would be a pity to undo all the good work you have put in so far just to vacuum the carpet and I say that as someone who is a compulsive vacuumer it is my favourite chore.

Fabulously useful video - so simple, so obvious, and yet revolutionary basic principles.

Hi. My bones happened spontaneously too. My bone score is quite bad. I would be very careful until you’ve had a dexa scan and you are on meds. Even then give it a little while before you even think of using your cleaner. I now use mine but not very often. I’ve got a cleaner that comes in and does it for me. I’ve also got an ironing lady. I can do a little bit but not much.

I would take all these questions to your physio for your last appt. Cordless hoovers are brilliant, I have a lightweight one but it is usually the way you move when using them that can cause discomfort. I have Osteoporosis & Osteopenia, my physio has shown me how to pace myself when doing those delightful domestic chores, how not to overextend when moving the hoover. I am sure you will be told to keep up with the exercises. Patience is something that is challenging especially when you start feeling strong & better, it is that thing to listen to your body which is ok but I know from experience it is ensuring I am one step ahead of my body so before I feel discomfort or pain, a timer is good.

I am sure you will look at everything that is suggested to you regarding medication, it can be a minefield & you will read lots of fors & against, use the ROS helpline & website it can help you in your decision making.

One step ahead of your body - exactly. Applies to a lot of conditions too.

If you have a compression fracture you have osteoporosis regardless of Dexa score.

No need to rush into decisions on treatment though.

Get all the info you can first.

Thank you, I will definitely get info as this is all new to me x

PS there are robot hoovers now, huh? I quite fancy one - might add ears and a tail.

Hi again Shaz - if you like medical literature there's an Extremely Thorough report - Search Michael Lewiecki Osteoporosis Clinical Evaluation.

It's US, v g on ruling out causes. Vit D deficiency eg being v common in OS -( and even if you supplement some are low) 60 per cent in one study under 30 ng/ml ie the bottom of the range. Vast numbers of possible contributory causes worth a read since your time previously spent Hoovering is now freed up. (!)
