sitting comfortably

hi, I’m on my 3rd set of fractures, hoping it’s only one this time, but seeing the doctor tomorrow to arrange X-ray.

I’ve tried everything to be able to sit without pain for the last 3 years, many different cushions so I can sit back. Three weeks ago I was feeling the best I’ve been for 3 years, even sitting comfortably and now I feel devastated to be starting again. I know it will slowly improve but I’d be so grateful for any tips on this

Here’s a tip from me! If you have a kyphosis and you can’t wear a bra because of the pressure the strap puts on your back, get a bra strap extender. Most shops that sell bras sell them, including M & S.

Hi Heleniumand,

Over the years and now having had 15 fractures which have left me with Scoliosis as well as Kyphosis I have had sooooo many different chairs along the way. 😔

We have bought and given away and some sold ( when only used a handful of times) others I have persevered with knowing they are not right and others I have used for longer periods of time.

The chair that has given me the comfort yet support needed has been my lounge chair ( so much that not being able to sit in any other apart from my wheelchair) I now have a second one which has enabled me to be in two different rooms in the house instead of just been stuck in one.

I can highly recommend it.

It is the ‘ACCORA CONFIGURA’ they are not a cheap chair.

It is a Dual motor Rise and Recline tilt in space chair with waterfall back. Available in different sizes.

It is a chair that will last you as long as needed.

Do I sound like I am on Commission?? 🤣

No you don’t! 😊, you sound very helpful. So sorry you’ve now got scoliosis, it breaks my heart that osteoporosis treatment is so behind others. I’ll have a look at the chair now, thanks for the tip

I sympathise I too have this issue. What has worked for me is an HSL fireside chair which is upright not recliner with good lumbar support. I have three of them in different rooms! I couldn’t deal with recliners but find these work for me. They have a home visiting service so I was able to test one at home and order. Good luck it is such a challenge to find comfort and I can’t sit stand or walk for long so I alternate! I can lie down and have a wonderful mattress topper from occupational therapy which helps.

Is occupational therapy at the hospital? I haven’t heard of there being such a helpful thing for ‘us’. I went to physiotherapy at my hospital and was then emailed a video of different exercises to help strengthen my back muscles 75% of which were too painful to do 🙁

I accessed them when I came home from hospital after my hip fracture. They adapted the house for me. I think you can access them yourself or through GP

I have an electric heat pad that I use to ease pain when I sit down and I find it wonderful. I have had three fractures in my back and I also have cervical Spondylosis and have to sit down frequently with pain.I use bra extenders. They do help but I can't wait to take my bra off. Wish I could go without one but I am too large busted!

Thanks for the reply paininneck, I also have to use a bra extender, and like you have to wear a bra when not at home. I’m going to look at the heat pads today

Hello Heleniumand

Sorry to read you have had problems withfrutures again.

It may be worth finding out if your area has an OT/Physio Service to advise on equipment and adaptations for the home (they are often under Social Care) someties this is a building with the equipment in it other times it's a home visiting service or phone / zoom type call. The idea is you get some help in what's available and can try things first before buying. Sadly the area I'm in used to have a center but is now just a phone service - I was helped with signposting to chairs, I tried and then bought (second hand) a chair for the kitchen, bath chair and tried different aids to get into and out of the car.

Also wondered if heat pads (or cold pads) would help? I have heat pads in bed and on two chairs in the house as I found these the most help leading to being able to tolerate various different chairs.

Like you I've tried alsorts of cushions in the end I found cot sized duvets some chairs I have two, one on top of the other!

Good luck in finding something really comfortable, hope you heal quickly from this fracture.

Best Wishes

Thank you Posy-White. I have heated pads which stick to whatever I’m wearing next to my skin, but I’ll look into your type too. I like the idea of a cot duvet!!! I shall definitely give that a try - tomorrow!

This such a lovely forum, everyone is so kind and helpful. Thanks again
