I was wondering if anyone has been advised by there doctors to take up jogging/step aerobics to help build up there bones. I am fit and ran about 10 years ago but I am now 62 and still fit but with having a -4 score on my spine not sure if this would be the correct exercise for me. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi I'm to 62 and T Score 4.7 I have a t12 fracture which happened Sept 2023 I was told to keep moving and walk as much as possible but never jumping or jogging as when osteoporosis is severe it can cause fractures. I also do some of the exercises on ROS which is very helpful. I too had a hard time adjusting as I was always very fit and healthy. It took awhile to adjust and I have now learnt to pace myself remembering things have changed but hey I'm alive lol. I have now been taken of AA and put on Teriparatide injection daily to help build bone I'm 7 weeks in to a 2 year course and doing ok although I section sites are getting a little sore.Good luck x

Rooruby thanks so much for replying. I just dnt feel comfortable about jogging to be honest. I do yoga twice a week and walk a lot daily. I was advised to go on the eventy injection but for now I have decided not to take them. Wishing you all the best

What us the difference between the eventy injection and the teriparatide injection. I understand you inject daily where as the eventy is 2 at the same time once a month.

For me it was side effects I have high cholesterol and cannot take statins so I was worried a little about that. It can be a issue for heart and strokes and I'm waiting to see heart specialist so I opted for daily tbh rather not take any but what can we do xxx

Hi , it is a dilemma working out what we can and can't do. I do ask professionals often and the same answer comes back that we shouldn't stop doing things we enjoy but make sensible adaptions .You mention yoga ,I do pilates but I no longer do roll ups of roll downs or spinal twisting. My teacher gives alternatives. I do walking ,follow ros exercises , and lately Scottish dancing ,like Country dancing. Keep active seems to be the best ,but be mindful of how you move. All the best .I am on eventy, no side effects,I felt lucky to be offered the chance of improving my bone density.

My T score was -2.5 i do walking and other gentle exercises I can’t take alondronic acid as I have bad gum disease and I’m too scared to take the other drugs as they have terrible side effects . As well as exercise I’m taking vit D and calcium and trying to eat healthy. Seeing doctor after Christmas to discuss what to do it’s very hard as I have other health issues was Healthy 5monthes ago !!

hi I was diagnosed 12 months ago with it in my spine but so far have not had an fractures. I am fit and active but focus on strength training and Pilates which is advised.

I’m 60 next year , I ski every year and am still going next month. It’s difficult as I want to be as active as possible whilst I can and don’t want to stop doing the things I love

Good luck

hi

I’m 63. I run 8k every week. I go the gym 5 times a week where I do 2 classes of body pump ( weights) 1 of body combat ( boxing moves) 1of step and I balance/ yoga.

I’m seeing a physio end Jan to ask if it’s all ok but I’m carrying on doing what I do

I renovate houses and need to be able to lift stuff etc.

I started Evenity 4 months ago

T score -3 in spine and -2.2 in femoral neck and -1.3 in hip.

Asked rheumatologist if I could carry on with above and he said just don’t do any sudden forward and backward movements…!! Like back flips I said !!!!

Nurse online read a generic advice sheet to me about not cleaning the bath and putting my washing on a stool while I hang it out .

Realised that all the advice is not geared towards fit people , so I’ve decided to just carry on and I’ve made some small adjustments.

I’ve started HRT , increasing calcium in diet went to Finland last week and skated on lake with my daughter , was more careful than before and put anti slip rubber things on my shoes .

I’m scared obviously that I’m not doing the right thing but life is now and I’m taking the approach to build / maintain muscle and to concentrate on not falling over by being active .

I'm also 62, with T scores of -2.4, -2.7 and -3. I'm extremely unfit from 12 years of chronic illness and chronic fatigue, and 5 years of cancer and cancer treatment. The cancer treatment was probably a big factor in me developing osteoporosis. There is absolutely no way I can jog or do star jumps. But I knew I had to do something, so I decided to stamp my feet. Then, when I saw my specialist, I asked about exercise, and whether I should avoid any particular exercise. I also explained about my fatique being an issue. He said there was nothing I should avoid doing. And he actually suggested stamping as an exercise I could do. He also suggested marching. I have no idea whether it's helping, but I'm hopeful.

Hi I'm sorry to hear that you had cancer and now have to face osteoporosis . I am in the same situation.I had breast cancer and took tamoxifen for 5 years which gave me terrible muscle and bone aches .Ten years on I now have osteoporosis and compression fractures in my upper spine and I have osteoarthritis in my lower spine. My GP finally admitted this week that my osteoporosis was due to the cancer treatment.I am currently waiting for an appointment for physiotherapy to check what exercise is best for me because I was told not to do hard impact exercises when I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis but I need to do hard impact exercises for osteoporosis so now I am really confused as what to do for the best.

It's really difficult to know what to do for the best, sometimes.
