T Score 2.5

I just received a T score of -2.5. Not sure if I should start AA treatment or try natural treatment. Has anyone improved their score with natural treatment or only with prescription treatment. If so what did you do?

I think you need a combination of medication and exercise especially weight lifting. I went from osteoporosis to ostepoenua but it took 18 years of both

I went from osteoporosis to osteopenia in 10 months. I did a combination of prunes, collagen, exercise, and the COMB supplements daily.

I am 64 years old and just recently had my 2-year dexa scan. I don't take any medications. I do take Citrical maximum Plus and vitamin K2 100 micrograms daily. Not everyone needs to take a calcium supplement, but I eat a plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-free diet and don't get enough calcium in my diet. My dexa scan done this past August stated, there has been no statistically significant change in bmd in comparison to the prior study. Comparing my last dexa scan, I noticed I went from osteoporosis in my right hip to osteopenia, my left hip also improved some. My spine did improve but that is the place that I still have osteoporosis. I'll take this as a win. I have read that improving bone density generally takes time, which is why DEXA scans are typically recommended every 1-2 years. Bone remodeling is a slow process, and significant changes in bone density may take months to years to become noticeable.I lift weights three times a week, walk with a weighted vest, use of vibration plate for 15 minutes sessions 5 days a week. I also do other weight-bearing exercises like heel drops, use resistance loop bands, and bounce on a mini trampoline. I don't plan on taking medications because a lot of them have such horrible side effects. My mom and her sisters never broke a bone and I haven't either. When I was 56, I had primary hyperparathyroidism which depleted my bones of calcium. My bones only started to improve a little when I had the surgery to remove 2 of my parathyroid glands due to adenomas. One thing I would say is that if you are having significant bone loss, to always look for other causes. For me I'm just going to continue what I'm doing and hope that I stay stable and continue to improve with each scan. Good luck to you whatever choice you make.

Any recommendation for medication should be based on fracture risk, not one t-score that's only on the cusp of osteoporosis. Do you have your fracture risk score (eg 10% risk of fracture in the next ten years)?

i’m sorry to hear that, but at least you know where you stand. I was in the same place two years ago with a double back fracture diagnosis of -2.6 after a few hours of skiing but half-way happy to find out I had osteoporosis earlier than later. I decided after a fair bit of research into the meds and discussion with my doctor to try a natural approach. I started hormone replacement therapy, daily strength training, daily hikes with five minutes of downhill for some high impact, a mostly low sugar healthy diet, a cup of 2% milk with each meal for natural calcium, and supplements of D3 and K2 and a multivitamin. A year later I was happily surprised at a -1.6 scan result and am hopeful for more improvement when I’m scanned this coming November. There are so many variables, and our bodies are so different, but I’ll always be on the side of trying natural therapies first unless there are mitigating circumstances. God speed!

Not everyone is so lucky. My osteoporosis was triggered by a bad accident and spinal fracture with a trapped nerve. Over 3 years my spine had continued to crumble. I am in too much pain to do much and have to wear a lumbar support for simple things like mopping the floor. I am on annual Aclasta and Calcium with Vit D3. No weight lifting for me, no more that walking and even that is difficult as I have to use a cane for fear of losing my balance (cane and support ordered by Rheumatologist ). I don’t know about family history as most of my near family died early. I live in a very rural area so attending a medical gym is impossible. Such is life, but some have osteoporosis flung at them.
