Soft bones, under pressure to take meds finally…

In hospital for unrelated issue but connected as well.

Very small fracture in knee likely caused by rough handling in a different hospital to the one I’m in now during a procedure.

I’ve refused the drugs for nearly eight years. Prolia sounds dreadful if you can’t tolerate like my sister felt but locked in for a whole unbearable six months. I’m getting a tooth out on Thursday which is problematic if you’re on any of the drugs. It won’t be the last tooth needing extraction either.

Up to now I’ve done the health route minus a lot of exercise. I’m partially disabled so limited walking is the only option. I’ve been visited by a physiotherapist who has only recommended walking as tolerated. She didn’t recommend any exercises.

I’m 78 turning 79 just before Xmas. I’ve decided not to take the drugs but the pressure has renewed now with what is happening. I also have had a compression fracture a while back but in the fairly recent past.

Thoughts, anyone?

Hi. I was diagnosed in 2008 and after alendronic acid I actually asked to go on Prolia as it was quite new and just a biannual injections seemed much easier. I had also had HRT before diagnosis for about 7 years which obviously didn’t help my bones as I had 3 fractures at diagnosis. I had 3 injections of Prolia but had a lot of utis which were in the side effects and I told the consultant I couldn’t tolerate it any longer because of this and he said then he couldn’t help me. That was about 2014 roughly by then. I left that clinic and it was 6 months before I found another doctor. Unfortunately what we knoynow is you must take another drug straight away which of course I didn’t have so I then started to get rebound fractures even tho by then I was on Xolendronic Acid infusions. I now have 11 fractures in my spine, 4/5 in pelvis and 2 hip replacements. How many I would have had if I d got something straight after Prolia I don’t know. I’m 72 now and have all spinal and pelvic fractures treated with cement. I try to walk as much as I can but still have pain and unfortunately have to take painkillers which I hate. I’m now on teriparatide which the first doctor wouldn’t give me. Had I had that after Prolia I may not be in this state but I’m sure there are many people who are ok on it, it was the uti s in my case. Anyway sorry long reply but good luck with your decision. You seem to do well with Physio’s and excercises, it just depends how much you have trust in your doctor.

With love Pam

Consider Tymlos or Forteo. I am taking Tylmos, it's been 6 months, the side effects were awful the first two weeks, then I took a break, for two days, started back, and they were 90% gone. Surgeon said bones are looking much better. He also said do not take any of the Bisphosphonates. They inhibit healing, reduce fusions. I'm still healing several spine fusions, and 10 fractures, seems like the wrong path to take one of those meds, like 95% of the doctors try to force on you. Tymlos builds bone. That's all I agreed to at this point.
