My dentist told me that if I had had any of the meds for osteoporosis it would make it difficult to do extractions etc. I would ask exactly how long they think you should wait. A ' while ' doesn't sound exact enough. Hope you get some answers.
I’m following this, as just been to see my dentist and consultant , and none of them gave me a time frame, of how long you should leave it, after stopping taking it, before you could have a tooth out, as can be dangerous.
Also my dentist said if I was on the meds, if I needed a tooth out, she wouldn’t take it out I would have to go into hosp, as they have all the equipment there, so how long should you be off the meds? I would def find out more first.
'A while' is, actually, a very precise indication. It means the speaker has absolutely no idea. Push them and they'll just make something up 'to satisfy you.'
I’m a. Dentist with experience in handling these cases. There is a lot of misinformation surrounding Bisphosponates. No treatment should be performed without adequate blood tests prior to surgical procedures. These include blood markers to see how much of the drug is in your system and blood creatinine levels to check kidney function. The proper specialist to manage your care is a maxillo-faciale surgeon so that any extractions and implants will be done to the highest standard. Dental work should be avoided until blood levels fall. Everyone is different. I’ve had patients who had to wait 9 months. Certainly if possible nothing should be done for 3 months. Do not smoke anything. Dental hygiene is essential. Brush and floss twice a day.
You can still have dental work done whilst having treatment for Osteoporosis.
However you will be referred to a maxi oral facial surgeon for any extractions. ( it is only like a dental appointment but at the dental clinic within the hospital)
When being treated for Osteoporosis any invasive dental work will try to be avoided.
I had a similar problem to yourself my tooth broke and I was left with very little, my own dentist is really cautious and on advice from the hospital she built the tooth up with a filling.
There are many things that can be done.
Dental hygiene is an absolute must this is what will help avoid any problems.
Your dentist should talk with you on your options, I found it was best to talk through any concerns as this really raises their awareness.
It is really good to hear you are doing well on your treatment x
I have heard of several people losing teeth following infusion. I am due tomorrow to see a private rheumatologist to find out what my options are following my DEXA .I can't take the AA or Risendronate tablets. I am -3.3 and I want to know how bad this is. I am now doing a phenomenal amount of exercise - walking , yoga, pilates , aqua and weights and I haven't lost any height so I am hoping to do it this way. How long does an infusion take and does it hurt.
Hi YorkshireOAP,
there is a fact sheet that further explains this very rare side effect that I hope helps, or give the helpline a ring as they talk about this often to callers. 0808 800 0035
only with reference to prolia, which is every 6 months, have the dental work done at the end of the 5th month into a dose, then wait a month and have the scheduled dose of prolia on time.
i have also read that the complications arise very mostly only in patients who've been on treatment for cancer, or other particular treatments
