How long should I stay on AA

I have been taking Alendronic Acid with no problems at all for 2.5 years. How long should one normally stay on this drug and should I be asking for another Dexa scan soon.

Different health authorities offer follow-up DEXA scans after different time periods, anything between 2 and 5 years! Most people seem to take AA for 5 years, then have a break, but the NICE patient decision aid points out that there's no evidence that taking it for more than 3 years has any benefits! See nice.org.uk/guidance/ta464/...

Hello, I contacted my GP in October 2021 having taken AA for the previous 5 years without any problems. I had read that a ‘drugs holiday’ was advisable and she agreed. I was given a scan which indicated I had moved in to the osteopenia range. So I expect to be called for another scan in 12-18 months. Meanwhile I am continuing with calcium supplements, a calcium rich diet, resistant exercises and lots of walking. It will be interesting to see what I am offered after my next scan. Hope that helps you in your decision making.

I've been taking it for 5 years. Just had a dexa scan which showed a significant improvement but I've been advised to stay on it for another 5 years and then have a rescan. Doctor says it's perfectly safe to keep taking it so I'm taking her advice. I'm 55.

Hello,

I took AA for 4 years and then had a dexa scan which showed a significant improvement. Stopped taking it in 2012 and have had 3 yearly scans since. I remain within normal range for my age.

I would advise you to push for a repeat scan after 3 years.

Best wishes Pam

Hi, I have been told by my consultant that I will be scanned after three years and if it is working will continue taking AA for two more years and then have another scan. I have also heard it recommended that you take a break after 5 years. They will continue to scan you every 2 or 3 years and should the need arise you can be put back on AA or an alternative.Good luck!
