I have recently been diagnosed with osteoperosis and have been advised that it is likely that my GP will do further tests (Parathyroid being one) then either offer me HRT or Alendronic acid, however I understand that if this is all caused by my parathyroid then no treatment is possible/offered?
I am hoping to get some advice as to what to what you think the best route to follow would be?
Diagnosed with Autoimmune underactive thyroid in 2016 and have suffered two broken wrists since 2019 hence the possibility that it is a parathyroid problem (Dexa nurse advised)
Many thanks for any assistance/advice or information you can offer.
Kind regards
Maud

Hello Maud, sorry to hear you are in the club no one wants to be in.
The parathyroid glands have nothing to do with your autoimmune thyroid. They are tucked in behind the thyroid gland. It is very good news that your doctor is doing further blood tests and is checking them out. If it turns out that there are problems with your parathyroid gland then you will need to have that fixed - an operation - before starting any sort of treatment. I just wish I was young enough to take HRT - alas im not. I would say don’t panic.
If you have your DEXA results you can post them for member to look at. It might be that you can improve things with diet and exercise.
Have a look on the Royal Osteoporosis Society website theros.org.uk/ You will find a massive amount of information on there.
Hi Maud , I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism, and osteoporosis. I had surgery to remove a faulty parathyroid gland and have see a 25% improvement in the bone density in my spine and 15% improvement in the hip bone density 18 months after my surgery. I refused to take Alendronic Acid as it can cause minute fractures.....research it carefully but if you do have hyperparathyroidism there is a very good self help group on Facebook. Hyperparathyroidukaction4change. Good luck with your tests
Hi Cappuchinobaby, this has come through t me rather than to Maud04. Hopefully she will see it or you could post it again to her. I’m sure she’ll be pleased to hear what you’ve got to say 😊
Hi Maud04, you can speak to a specialist nurse on the free helpline number when they are back after the Christmas break. 0808 800 0035. Also on the Royal Osteoporosis society web pages are lots of fact sheets about the drugs and other risk factors like Hyperparathyroidism.
As other members have indicated you must wait and see what the results are for your parathyroid tests, as these will indicate the treatment path you need to take.
Try not to worry about it. It will all get sorted out. Best wishes and Happy New Year.
