Starting AA

Firstly thanks to all who replied to my original post, very helpful.

I saw my Dentist finally, after COVID, last week to get her views, a full exam and hygienist clean and she was kind enough to spend extra time discussing the advantages and disadvantages of AA.

She then passed me as clear to start AA if I chose to do so. After much deliberation I decided to try so took my first tablet early this morning, so far so good. I followed the instructions on taking it to the letter and feel OK .

I’ll let you know how things go.

Dry, cold but beautifully sunny here so on my way out for walk. Take care.

My dentist told me the same thing and that taking it was better than breaking my hip x

I think we are all scared of AA and all the other Meds, in my case my spine score is so bad I had no option. I have done three weeks on AA now and have not had any problems. The first one I took stood bolt upright I was gripping onto the window sill expecting to keel over at any second. It was a scary feeling! I am just trying to book an appointment with my dentist as I did not get opportunity before starting AA and I have a loose tooth. My GP shrugged it off and said it would not be of any significance to have it out now or even in a few months as side effects on the jaw would not happen in that time limit, I hope he is right. Good luck.

You made me giggle at your description of staying upright. 😃 must say I was careful as when you read all the warnings it sounds worrying.

My dentist says it’s important to make the hygienist my best friend and to pay particular attention to cleaning with Teepees around the implant with BlueM gel as there pockets there.

Had a very space tech style, low radiation CT scan which gives a picture of the whole jaw so it can be monitored. No gagging on x-ray plates - yeah! I was very impressed with her thoroughness. She emailed me the scans so I have my own record. She also said that our top jaws are similar to MDF bone is more porous, I had a tooth that had dropped & was catching on the bottom tooth so she filed that down but bottom jaw is more like sold oak.

Hope your extraction goes well - I was told if I needed one it would have to be done in the dental hospital to ensure good bone healing.

Best wishes

Your dentist sounds impressive CDreamer. What is BlueM gel?

I was impressed. It’s a range of products to keep gums healthy based on oxygen as an active ingredient rather than using corrosive mouth washes which stain teeth. I have an implant & have had gum disease so need to be careful.

I started on AA acid in May this year due to medicine induced osteoporosis. I’d just had a clear dental check, but then lost a crown which pulled out most of the remaining tooth, and then developed an abscess in another root treated tooth. I had a bit of a melt down and went and saw a senior, very experienced, dentist at the Practice. He recommended removing both teeth as id not been on the medication very long, and is happy to put implants in, although will give antibiotics just to be safe. Both extractions healed well within the normal timescale. I’m still a bit unsure whether to proceed with the implants as still have some worries about Osteocronosis. The knee thing in favour as it’s possibly better to have them now rather than when I’ve been on the AA longer.

I had to have a tooth out during one of the lockdowns. It took months for the bone to heal. I didn't understand until then that AA slows down bone regeneration.

Exactly - my GP said to get any dental work done prior to starting/
